Truly this is a grassroots effort and a perfect example of People Helping People.
The CookShop a government sponsored program is the core nutrition education program of the Food Bank For New York City. It gives low-income children, adults and teens the knowledge and tools to adopt and enjoy a healthy diet on a limited budget. With hands-on workshops it reaches more than 28,000 New Yorkers across all five boroughs,
CookShop teaches cooking skills and nutrition information and fosters enthusiasm for fresh, affordable fruits, vegetables and other whole foods.
The goals of the CookShop are:
- provides people with basic survival tools and solid nutritional support each person
- gives each teen and adult a chance to help themselves and their families
- helps decrease childhood hunger,
- helps decrease obesity, and diet-related disease in neighborhoods where household income is low, access to healthy foods is limited, and rates of obesity and diet-related disease are high.
CookShop, gives the trainers the education, ongoing technical support, complete curriculum materials and all of the food, supplies and equipment needed for cooking lessons and class activities.
It uses hands-on exploration and cooking activities to helps create interesting activities that can be shared with their children, while all enjoy eating healthy foods,
CookShop Classroom is used in approximately 1,300 public elementary and after-school classes.”
