As reported on ESPN’s,  “Outside the Lines” checked out health department inspection reports for food and beverage outlets at all 107 North American arenas and stadiums that were home to Major League Baseball, National Football League, National Hockey League and National Basketball Association teams in 2009.

An 2009 report cited more than half of the concession stands or restaurants for at least one if not more

“critical” or “major” health violation.

Such violations pose a risk for foodborne illnesses that can make someone sick, or, in extreme cases, become fatal.


“[That]”critical” or “major” health violation.) ( tells consumers that they should be very concerned about some of the food that they are eating and purchasing in a lot of these stadiums,” said Chris Waldrop, director of the Food Policy Institute at the Consumer Federation of America, a Washington, D.C., nonprofit organization that lobbies for stronger food safety laws.

Arizona Chase Field Arizona Diamondbacks Vendors with critical violations: 28% Inspection report: In July 2008, a worker at a TGI Friday’s at the ballpark was diagnosed with salmonella poisoning. When inspectors visited the restaurant, they issued two critical violations for improper employee hand-washing and not requiring employees to report illnesses.

Inspection report: Expired milk, brown lettuce and employees caught drinking or eating while they were working in the stand accounted for some of the stadium’s critical violations.

Inspection report excerpt: Inspectors found 18 pounds of hot dogs that had expired more than 10 days prior.


Cowboys Stadium Dallas Cowboys Vendors with critical violations: 72%  Inspection report: In its first season, Cowboys Stadium had a relatively high percentage of critical violations, including several for inadequate hand-washing facilities. At one kiosk, hot dogs were 71 degrees, almost half the required holding temperature of 135 degrees.

Minute Maid Park Houston Astros Vendors with critical violations: 3%  Inspection report: One location with a self-service buffet received a critical violation for not having sneeze guards in place.

Rangers Ballpark in Arlington Texas Rangers Vendors with critical violations: 62%  Inspection report: One pizza vendor incurred 12 critical violations, mostly for improper food temperatures and for not preventing possible contamination.
