"Cool treatment for Sudden Cardiac Arrest"

When someone suffers cardiac arrest, the heart suddenly stops beating due to an abnormal heart rhythm called ventricular fibrillation. Within seconds, the victim loses consciousness, collapses and has no pulse. The blood and oxygen supply to the brain and body dminishes.

Only immediate emergency treatment to restart the heart, such as CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and external defibrillation (electrical shock), can prevent death. Time is the key factor in survival for these victims. The American Heart Association recommends resuscitation within five minutes of collapse or sooner.

In two research studies Researchers have found that survival with good outcomes can be increased if certain cardiac arrest patients have their bodies cooled for 12 to 24 hours.
The effectiveness of the cooling treatment  called therapeutic hypothermia  was shown in two 2002 New England Journal of Medicine studies of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients who were cooled to a body temperature of about 33 degrees Celsius (around 91 degrees Fahrenheit) for 12 to 24 hours. Today most hospitals still do not use this life saving treatment.

"Communication without words after trauma or disease"

There is a new machine that can help individuals that have lost the ability to speak talk again.

Cathy Wolf  lost her ability to speak, but through a new speech assist machine called the Brain-Computer Interface system, she can communicate again.

Cathy Wolf of Katonah, N.Y., is able to manage only a small amount of muscle movement in her face and neck. Still, she’s helping test an alternative communication system that, it’s hoped, will help her and others with ALS compensate for this loss of voluntary muscle control.

Wolf currently uses the WiViK onscreen keyboard, E-triloquist speech program software and a switch she can operate with her eyebrow. When the time comes, she says, she will use BCI full time.

The Brain-Computer Interface system reads electric currents created by nerve cells talking to each other in the brain. It allows users to control a computer and communicate through e-mail, other computer-based communication systems, or synthetic speech.

Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) is under development by researchers at the Wadsworth Center, an arm of the New York State Department of Health, in Albany, N.Y. The BCI system — comprising a small laptop computer, an amplifier, a 20-inch monitor and a cap fitted with electrodes — “reads” the electric currents created by cellular activity in the brain, allowing the user to control a computer and communicate through e-mail, other computer-based communication systems or synthetic speech.

Brain signals instead of muscles It’s hoped that BCI will be made widely available for in-home use by people unable to communicate by other means as a result of disease or injury. Although it has potential for use by people affected by spinal cord injuries, stroke or other diseases, Wolf and the four other people currently testing the system all have ALS.

The BCI system is calibrated to the individual, and its use in anyone with advanced ALS requires a caregiver or someone else who can first put the cap containing the electrodes on the user’s head, and then start the system. From there, the user can control everything using brain signals instead of muscles, up to and including shutting down the computer.

In fall 1997, Wolf learned she has ALS. Since then, management of the disease has included a tracheostomy and ventilator, and a feeding tube. Unable to speak, Wolf communicates with her husband Joel and the rest of the world using a WiViK onscreen keyboard; E-triloquist speech program software; and a SCATIR switch that works through detection of a reflected beam of light and which she operates with her eyebrows.

"Forest breathing – can improve your health"

Forests, parks, botanical gardens and other places with plenty of trees and plants can increase your immune function while improving your health and reducing your stress.

What is the secret to their healing properties?
Scientists claim that plant phytoncides, or odor that a plant gives off to protect itself from disease and insects damage also benefits humans. this confirms the use  by integrated people and medicine practitioners and doctors for thousands of years.

People who visited nature parks for therapy, “Shinrin-yoku,” or “forest bathing.” have:
1. lowered concentrations of cortisol, dropped their pulse rate, and lower blood pressure
while raising levels of white blood cells.
2. in 2007 men who took two-hour walks in a forest over two days had a 50-percent increase in the levels of natural killer cells.
3. Another study found an increase in white blood cells that lasted a week in women exposed to phytoncides in forest air.
Various plants, mint, lavender, frankincense, rose, onion, garlic, tea tree, oak and pine trees, and many other plants give off phytoncides. Oak contains a substance called greenery alcohol; garlic contains allicin and diallyl disulfide; and pine contains alpha-pinene, carene, myrcene and other terpenes. More than 5000 volatile substances defend the surrounding plants from bacteria, fungi and insects.
While they protect themselves with these chemicals or volatile oils and resins they help to reduce our stress and boost our immune system. For more information on the therapeutic uses of plant oils contact CMA.

"Hope for traumatic brain injury"

“Brain injuries differ dramatically from patient to patient depending on the location, type, intensity, and duration of the injury. An injury can immediately cause rips in the white matter, brain hemorrhage, swelling, and, most commonly, bruising. One insult (i.e. hitting head, swelling, bleeding or residual trauma from an old injury to the brain)) is superimposed on another as, following the injury, the brain begins to experience reduced blood flow and oxygen deficiency…

Within minutes or hours after an injury, tiny holes rip through neuronal membranes and ion channels get stuck open, leaking proteins and neurotransmitters. Free radicals and calcium spread, causing cell death and tissue damage. Early gene activation of apoptotic enzymes sends more cells into a death spiral. Mitochondria sputter, then fall silent. Astrocytes swell. The damage can be isolated or extensive.

Researchers and doctors to date have had a very antiquated system of classification for TBIs. A new, validated system has now been devised which divides TBI patients into subgroups based on the type and location of injuries, not based on their consciousness. Then, therapies that benefit specific injury types can be targeted to those subgroups. It is the initial step toward a positive clinical trial for TBI.
Another ray of hope for the treatment of TBIs is the use of progesterone. It seems to pose the possibility of becoming the magic bullet for the treatment.
Through  Don Stein’s 27 years of research on progesterone is has been shown that progesterone  produced in the brain as well as the ovaries and can easily cross the blood brain barrier. Both men and women have progesterone receptors in their brains and it  prevents the expression of inflammatory cytokines in the brain, block apoptosis, stimulate growth-promoting factors, and even have a role in remyelination of neurons.

Thus progesterone decreases the accumulation of fluids in the brain after injury, reduces secondary neuronal loss, and improves outcomes in rats. “It’s the Swiss army knife of therapies,” laughs Douglas Smith, director of the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Brain Injury and Repair. “It can take care of everything.”

Human trials are soon to get under way.

Natural integrated care and medicine like homeopathic remedies and acupuncture and neuro- kinesiology can be used to augment traditional care. These energetic forms of care can monitor the trauma, by the changing pulses and the meridian flows to determine how the body’s energetic systems are dealing with the trauma and then homeopathy can neural-kinesiology can de-stress the neuronal circuitry to enhance the healing and recovery process.

"Hope for ADHD"

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD or ADD) is a neurobehavioral developmental disorder that affecting about 3% to 5% of children globally.  About 2% to 16% of school aged children suffer from this misunderstood condition.  30% to 50% of those individuals diagnosed in childhood continuing to have symptoms into adulthood.
Children with ADHD usually have attentional problems and hyperactivity. Their can be a genetic component to this problem.
Children and adolescents with ADHD tend to develop strategies and coping mechanisms to deal with the stresses both physical, mental and emotional that their restlessness and easy distractibility often create. School life can be painful and unrewarding, because they are unable to focus long enough to use the high intelligence they have. Misunderstood and with an educational and work environment that often is not organized or supported properly to nourish success, these children often do not receive help they need to succeed. Then the challenged and emotional  distress is carried over into adulthood with  4.7 percent of American adults thought to be living with ADHD.
ADHD is diagnosed more often in boys as in girls though studies suggest this discrepancy may be due to subjective bias of referring teachers.
Hope

ADHD management traditionally includes medications, behavior modifications, lifestyle changes, and counseling.  However, their are integrated medicine therapies such as homeopathy, neuro-emotional acu-non therapy, nutritional support and supplements, to name a few. Contact Complementary Medicine Association for more information.
A combination of individualized therapies can release the physical, emotional and neural stress that has built up within these individuals so they can reach their potential.

"Natural product companies score -1 FDA-0 "

The United States District Court for the District of Columbia has ruled that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) violated the First Amendment rights of a nutritional supplement company when it censored truthful, scientifically-backed claims about how selenium can help reduce the risk of cancer.

In this case,  the FDA tried to censor a company’s selenium supplements saying that the claims about the health benefits of the dietary supplements could not be justified.

In this court case, Alliance for Natural Health, the plaintiffs—including Durk Pearson, Sandy Shaw and the Coalition to End FDA and FTC Censorship sued FDA, based on precedent cases, over the denial of a petition for several qualified health claims for selenium and the risk of certain cancers., the judge ruled that the FDA violated the First Amendment rights of the plaintiffs by restricting their free speech about the anti-cancer benefits of their selenium supplements.

The FDA harasses legitimate nutritional supplement companies by

  • sending letters threatening to arrest the owners
  • imprisoning them
  • destroying their business
  • seizing their customer records
  • confiscating their inventory for non compliance. To learn more

These terror tactics have been extremely effective, because most U.S. companies lack the financial resources to battle the FDA in court.

This victory by the Alliance for Natural Health is landmark: It provides a legal wedge by which other companies can now begin to stand up for their own First Amendment rights. there were better and more appropriately designed studies assessing the effects of nutrients on chronic disease risk reduction, the need to extensively qualify claims would be lessened.  NIH seems to be moving in this direction, with both ODS and NCCAM focusing future research dollars on smaller, more rigorous  Phase-2 trials that will invest heavily in the use of biomarkers of exposure and surrogates for disease.  However, any results are years away.

An example of the FDA’s harrassment of the natural food producers target the health claims about cherries and walnuts.

Both the FDA and FTC have been attempting to suppress the truth about cherries and walnuts for many years, intimidating cherry and walnut product companies with all sorts of threats to try to force them to remove any links to scientific information about the health benefits of cherries and walnuts. "Infant diarrea vaccines in question"

Washington, D.C., June 1, 2010 – The National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) joins with holistic health pioneer Dr. Joseph Mercola in calling for Merck to voluntarily recall its live rotavirus vaccine – RotaTeq – which is contaminated with parts of a lethal virus that infects pigs – porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2) – and publicly pledge to clean-up the vaccine.

On May 7th, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) publicly pledged to re-formulate its rotavirus vaccine, Rotarix, by removing DNA from a non-lethal pig virus (PCV1). RotaTeq is contaminated with DNA from both PCV1 and PCV2. PCV2 is an aggressive virus that causes immune suppression, wasting disease and death in baby pigs.

“Responsible corporations voluntarily recall contaminated foods and drugs that could possibly compromise safety,” said NVIC Co-Founder & President Barbara Loe Fisher. “When RotaTeq is squirted into the mouths of babies, how many doctors or parents know those babies are swallowing DNA from a virus that can injure and kill baby pigs?”

"McCain's supplement bill"

Congress will likely pass around 500 bills in 2010 that will impact the lives of every-day Americans like you and I.

One of Senator McCain’s latest bills shouldn’t be among them, and you can help make certain his bill doesn’t see the light of day.

He introduced a misguided bill that threatens access to dietary and health supplements many Americans depend on.

The stated aim of his so-called Dietary Supplement Safety Act (DSSA) is to curb doping in major league sports. But in reality, the bill will do more harm than good. The FDA already has power to do more to stop illegal steroids. What’s most troubling is that if Senator McCain’s bill passes, it would repeal key protections in the 1994 Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) and give the FDA sweeping new powers.

What would this mean for us? It would likely lead to drastically fewer supplements available and higher prices.

The public outcry has gotten Senator McCain’s attention, but time is running out. A final big push could change McCain’s mind.

Please take a moment and urge your Senator to oppose Senator McCain’s harmful anti-supplement legislation.

It is critical that we keep the pressure on, and with your help, we can ensure the final defeat of this bad bill. The following are the four parts of the bill.

1. Requires all dietary supplement manufacturing, processing and holding facilities to register with the Secretary of Health and Human Services;

2. Gives the Food and Drug Administration authority to issue a mandatory recall order if a dietary supplement is adulterated or misbranded or “the use of such supplement could cause serious adverse health consequences such as death;”

3. Requires the FDA commissioner to publish guidelines on new dietary ingredients “as soon as possible;”

4. Mandates the FDA notify the Drug Enforcement Administration when a new product contains a synthetic anabolic steroid.

Athletes from various sports have blamed positive drug tests on substances that turn up in dietary supplements even though they aren’t listed as ingredients on the label.

McCain has said his bill would protect professional and Olympic athletes — along with casual sports participants who use supplements.

Please contact your senators today and tell them not to co-sponsor or support Senator McCain’s bill.

"Relax your soles and bod"

After a hard day on your feet working, out hiking or exercising

There is nothing better than to come home and relax those “doggies”.

good soak

Your body and feet  will feel energized if you take a soak in a tub of very hot water (not hot enough to burn)

Add 1/2 cup of  natural baking soda ( or a palm full of epson salts) and a few drops of oil to the tub as it is filling.

Soak in the tub until the water begins to cool slightly.

Wash off and dress in comfy warm clothes and take a nap oe relax with some nice music.

"Yawning helps you win"

“Yawning seconds before the biggest moment of his career, Apolo Anton Ohno. surprized many spectators and viewers around the world.

Yawning does not indicate boredom or exhaustion, but it is a natural response of the body to release stress by taking in oxygen.  Under stress the body gets depleted of oxygen and yawning refuels the oxygen going to the brain. In turn the brain sends out messages through the nervous system to inhale deeper and relax. Next the chest expands and the body becomes more relaxed and able to focus on the task at hand.

There was some research done on a group of students that practiced controlled yawning for a few minutes before they took a college exam and their grade point went up a letter grade from Cs to Bs and from Bs to As by practicing controlled yawning. Ohno himself confirmed,  “It makes me feel better,” he said. “It gets the oxygen in and the nerves out.”

Animals of all kinds yawn
