“What’s swinging in your family tree?”

– M.Wolken editor of CMANews
When I went in the early 90s to a family reunion for my mother family I took time to observe what was swinging from my family’s health tree and the decade of life these  various health imbalances began to show. It was fasinating glimpse into the my possible health future.
My training in natural medicines especially Homeopathy has taught me to look at each of life’s challenges from a different perspective. Our response to each health and or emotional crisis has come to be from our cumulative training from those people and the environment both inside our body as well as those stresses of living our life has brought us.

To assist a person  find peace and wellness a practitioner must learn as much about the entire personal and familial history  as possible. Nothing in health or dis-ease happens in isolation.

Family health history a powerful, underused tool in modern medicine today.
In integrated medical practice like homeopathy, ayurvedic, oriental, and naturopathic medicines, the family history has always been seen as needed. We were taught the better the initial history the better the evaluation, the better insight, the better individualized care and the more positive the healing.

In Homeopathy and Oriental medicine add another aspect to the history and patient profile, learning how to observe how a person, how they move, presents themselves, shake hands, the health and coloring of their tongue and their emotional history are the vital components of the patient history.

These wholistic aspects to patient care are so often ignored or missed in the current “managed care system of seeing a person every 3 to 5 minutes, reminding them to focus only on what is bothering them the most and running on to the next person before the patient has gotten acquainted with the professional.
A recent  Cleveland Clinic study compared using a good oral family history to using simply the lab results from an online genomic testing services that analyze DNA glitches and predict people’s predisposition to various diseases to uncovered who might be at an increased risk of cancer.  Not surprisingly , a good family history taken by an office assistant from relatives accompanying the patient was found to be a better predictor.
All it costs is a little time questioning your relatives, yet good family health trees are rare. A government survey estimated less than a third of families have one – and time-crunched doctors seldom push their patients to remedy that.

*Encourage each family to write down as much as they can remember about the conditions their parents and elderly had, how they died and from what. Knowing both sides of your family tree are vital. A study of 2,500 women found that women not only know less about the health of their paternal relatives, they tend to dismiss the threat of breast cancer if it’s on Dad’s side.
“It’s a risk no matter what,” says Dr. Wendy Rubinstein of Chicago’s North Shore University Health System.

Dr. Charis Eng, a cancer geneticist at the Cleveland Clinic’s Genomic Medicine Institute believes that  “It’s the best-kept secret in health care.”

How to start your family health history.

The U.S. Surgeon General operates a free website – https://familyhistory.hhs.gov – that helps people create a family health history and share it electronically with relatives and their doctor.

“Go Mediterranean avoid plus girth”

Adherence to the healthy Mediterranean dietary patterns are key factors for avoiding the natural long-term yearly weight gain occurring during adulthood and with advancing age.
These are the findings of a research study after following 10,000 Spanish university graduates for six years. The average age of the students were 38 years The study found the average participant gained half a pound (0.24 kilograms) per year.
Those that strictly followed the Mediterranean plan were 10 percent less likely to become overweight or obese by the end of the study, and had 24 percent lower odds of packing on more than 11 pounds (5 kilograms) over the study’s first four years.

The Mediterranean dietary pattern focuses on fresh fruit and vegetables, olive oil, non processed grains, lean meat and fish. More weight might have been lost if non-virgin olive oil was used.  This foods combination approach causes less inflammation in the body.

Iris Shai of Ben Gurion University, in Israel, observed that people who follow the Mediterranean diet are likely to be more satiated by the high fiber content of a typical meal and tend to consume fewer “empty calories.”

“Rx for success”

If they walk like a duck
If they quack like a duck
They must be ducks.
Once again hasty generalization is not valid.

What turns a dummy pill into a catalyst for relieving pain, anxiety, depression, sexual dysfunction, or the tremors of Parkinson’s disease? The brain’s own healing mechanisms, unleashed by the belief that a phony medication is the real thing. The most important ingredient in any placebo is the doctor’s bedside manner, but according to research, the color of a tablet can boost the effectiveness even of genuine meds—or help convince a patient that a placebo is a potent remedy.—Steve Silberman

Researchers at the University of California published in the October issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.a review of a 167 placebo-controlled trials published in peer-reviewed medical journals in 2008 and 2009 and found that 92 percent of those trials never even described the ingredients of their placebo pills.

There are no regulations govern placebo composition. The composition of placebos can in randomized, placebo-controlled trials. Reviewers independently abstracted data from the introduction and methods sections of identified articles, recording treatment type (pill, injection, or other) and whether placebo composition was stated. They found that most studies disclosure was less common for pills than for injections and other treatments (8.2% vs. 26.7%; P = 0.002). Placebos were seldom described in randomized, controlled trials of pills or capsules. Because the nature of the placebo can influence trial outcomes, placebo formulation should be disclosed in reports of placebo-controlled trials.
Why is this important. The fact that “modern medical research” claims that their system of drugs is better and safer for patients then homeopathy, herbs, or acupuncture, because they have run double and triple blind studies using placebos to measure the effectiveness of the trial medicine.
What they have not done is standardize what is in the placebos. Why? It was considered unimportant and the less attention given to individuals getting better on something other than the test drug was baffling and down right bad for Big Pharm business.

A placebo may contain sugar or olive oil or salt or some liquid for all the patients know, but they may outperform the trial drug. Why? The placebo or healing response works best when the patient or tester spends quality time with a health professional before the trial begins.

Yes, consistently placebo + human caring + hope +belief = better results with or without the trial drug even over extended periods of time.

So healing of the body begins in the mind of the patient and is accelerated when the practitioner explains and shares his support and expertise with the patient.  People caring for people is the key to success in life, love and healing.

This is very important for another reason too-the patients put their hopes and faith in the test that they will be helped. The mindset of the person can be giving better results than the test drug. The placebo could also potentially harm the individual as well.

“No Cow’s milk for infants and young kids”

Cow’s milk is not recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics for children under 1 year old.

Infants fed whole milk from cows get insufficient amts of

  • vitamin E
  • iron
  • essential fatty acids.

Infants fed whole milk from cows get too much

  • too much protein
  • sodium,
  • potassium.

These levels may be too high for the infant’s system to handle. Also, whole cow’s milk protein and fat are more difficult for an infant to digest and absorb.

For the best infant nutrition, pick the right milk source the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants be fed breast milk or iron-fortified formula during the first 12 months of life. Between ages 4 – 6 months, certain solid foods may be added (not fruits).

Breast milk or iron-fortified formula, along with age-appropriate solid foods and avoid  juices during the first year of life, provides more balanced nutrition.

Iron-fortified infant formula or breast milk should be used until a child is 1 year old. No  Dairy Intake for Babies and Toddlers.

“One advantage to getting older -weight loss”

For middle age and older adults weight loss is increased by drinking two glasses of water before eating.
Recent research has found that one can lose 30 percent more weight than those who did  not drink before eating. Scientists at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg assigned 48 overweight or obese men and women ages 55 to 75 to one of two groups. Both groups consumed low-fat, low-calorie diets for 12 weeks, but one group was told to drink two 8-ounce glasses of water before breakfast, lunch and dinner.
After 12 weeks, the water drinkers shed about 15.5 pounds, while the other group dropped about 11 pounds. The two groups were followed for one year and those who continued to drink water before meals lost even more weight, on average about 1.5 pounds.
Water fills the stomach with a zero-calorie fluid, so people eat less. However this seems to work only for this age group , because the stomach releases the water much slower from the stomach.
The study was funded by the Institute for Public Health and Water Research, a nonprofit, independent science organization that was launched by an unrestricted grant from the Brita Products Company.

“Natural ways to get rid of warts”

No one likes warts, but how do we get them and more important how can they be removed.

A range of types of wart have been identified, varying in shape and site affected, as well as the type of human papillomavirus involved. These include

Common wart (Verruca vulgaris), a raised wart with roughened surface, most common on hands,
but can grow anywhere on the body;  Common warts are different from moles, and they aren’t cancerous. In fact, they’re usually harmless and often disappear on their own. But you may find common warts bothersome or embarrassing, and you may want treatment to remove them.

Treatment helps prevent common warts from spreading to other parts of your body or to other people. But common warts may recur after treatment, and they may be a persistent problem.

Flat wart (Verruca plana), a small, smooth flattened wart, flesh-coloured, which can occur in large numbers; most common on the face, neck, hands, wrists and knees.
Filiform or digitate wart on the lip, is a thread- or finger-like wart, most common on the face, especially near the eyelids and lips.

Plantar wart (verruca, Verruca pedis), a hard sometimes painful lump, often with multiple black specks in the center. They are usually only found on pressure points on the soles of the feet.

Mosaic wart, a group of tightly clustered plantar-type warts, commonly on the hands or soles of the feet;

Genital wart (venereal wart, Condyloma acuminatum, Verruca acuminata), a wart that occurs on the genitalia.
Periungual wart, a cauliflower-like cluster of warts that occurs around the nails.

The human papilloma virus (HPV) is the cause of warts. These growths can  appear anywhere on the skin of the body. From the head and face to the genital area and feet. They may look like small, fleshy bumps; hard, flat growths with a rough surface and well-defined boundaries; gray or brown lumps with tiny pinprick-size black dots.

There are about 130 known types of human papilloma viruses. HPV infects the squamous epithelium, usually of the skin or genitals, but each HPV type is typically only able to infect only a few specific areas on the body. Many HPV types can produce a benign growth, often called a “wart” or “papilloma”, in the area they infect. To grow the papilloma needs a blood supply to nourish it that is supplied by a network of capillaries.

Treatment for common warts

There are many different treatments and procedures associated with wart removal. One review of 52 clinical trials of various cutaneous wart treatments concluded that topical treatments containing salicylic acid were the best supported, with an average cure rate of 75%, compared with 48% for the placebo in six placebo-controlled trials including a total of 376 participants. The reviewers also concluded that there was little evidence of a significant benefit of cryotherapy (freezing with nitrogen) over salicylic acid or duct tape.

In a double-blind, randomized and controlled clinical trial at Mayo in 90 adults when transparent duct tape was compared to mole skin, there was no statistically significant difference for resolution of the target wart between patients treated with moleskin versus patients treated with duct tape. Eight of 39 patients (21%) in the treatment group vs 9 of 41 patients in the control group (22%) had complete resolution of the target wart. Fewer of the patients achieving resolution of their wart in the moleskin group had recurrence of their wart.

For Plantar warts often covering them with duck tape for a week up to 1 month then gently soaking off the tape. Drying the area and rubbing it gently with an emery board or pumice stone. Repeat the process over the course of a month or two before the warts disappear, but a study published in the October 2002 Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine found that the duct tape method worked better than having a doctor freeze the warts off with liquid nitrogen, which can be painful and cause scarring. It  is as effective as using any drug or over the counter preparation on them.

If a person has a very delicate or sensitive skin do not do this treatment. then soak in water and rub gently with an emery board or pumice stone. You may have to repeat the process over the course of a month or two before the warts disappear, but a study published in the October 2002 Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine found that the duct tape method worked better than having a doctor freeze the warts off with liquid nitrogen, which can be painful and cause scarring.

Other treatments for Plantar warts  include Leave them alone. Most will disappear without treatment, sooner or later.
Try a “paint on” solution. Look for an over-the-counter treatment containing a 40 percent salicylic acid, and apply once or twice a day for a few weeks. To help avoid getting plantar warts, avoid areas known to harbor the virus, including warm, moist places such as shower floors, locker rooms and public swimming pools. Always wear shower thongs or sandals when you use a public locker room or shower, and use foot powders and change your socks often to keep feet dry.

Homeopathic medicine has been effective in treating Plantar and figwarts. Contact your local naturopathic or homeopathic health care provider to find the remedy most beneficial to you.

Some have even used visualization to rid themselves of warts. By only seeing the area that holds the wart as perfect skin and the wart shrinking, the frequency of the cells in the area change and if your diet becomes more alkaline then viruses cannot live in an alkaline environment.

“Sitting more now your body enjoying it less -women at risk”

American Cancer Society researchers finds that physical activity can be somewhat nullified by spend sitting too long. It may even raise the risk of an earlier death. Researchers say time spent sitting was independently associated with total mortality, regardless of physical activity level.
