“Be proactive to lessen SAD symptoms and the winter blues”

Seasonal Effective Disorder and the winter blues may both be strongly aggrevated byinsufficient light which can disrupt the body’s hormonal balance. It seems that the light/dark and sleep cycles are orchestrated by the pineal gland.that controls the flow of light energy traveling through the nerve pathways from the eyes to various parts of the brain.  The light must be brighter than ordinary room light to activate the pineal gland.

When the pineal gland senses darkness of night secretes a hormone called melatonin, which has sedative properties.

These symptoms of SAD or the winter moody blues can be lessened by

  • increasing exposure to light, either by being outdoors more in the winter or using full-spectrum lighting in the home that contain the full spectrum from ultraviolet to infrared, violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, red, and others.
  • Limit the amount of time you wearing sunglasses because sunglasses limit the light traveling from the eyes to the pineal gland. Caution: Take precautionary measures when sunlight is strong.
  • Deficiency in any nutrient can cause an imbalance to the body which may result in a worsening of the winter blues or SAD.
  • try to eat a well-balanced diet to help your body cope with seasonal changes.  Be sure to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, including many raw fruits and vegetables.
  • Eat more raw foods and drink green/fruit drinks. Have a large and varied salad at each meal; raw fruits, nuts, and seeds (unsalted preferred)

These foods and condiments are high in magnesium  *  iron * selenium which help decrease SAD or winter blues symptoms.

“How to curb the decline in endangered sealife”

Knowing how fish are raised and caught is the first step in sustainable buying.

Look for these key descriptive terms on the label:
Trolling: Baited fishing lines pulled behind a boat; little or no bycatch of unwanted fish.
Pole-caught: Single fishing line attached to a pole; little or no bycatch.

Purse seining: Large wall of netting encircles schools of fish, such as sardines, or species that gather to spawn, such as squid; some types unintentionally catch other animals.
Longlining: Central fishing line, sometimes more than 50 miles long, holds smaller, baited lines; primarily used to catch tuna, halibut and swordfish, but it also hooks sea turtles, sharks and seabirds attracted to the bait.

Trawling: Large nets dragged through the ocean, either midway down or along the floor; nonselective and bottom trawling seriously damages seabeds.
Green money talks louder than retoric. If you want to eat healthier foods, then let your purse do the talking.

If you do not buy junk, pesticided food or toxic or endangered species meat, GMO plants, animals, or toxic seafood then the pressure to harvest so much meat from the sea or land will not be there.
Look for ecolabels before you buy

Ecolabels or green stickers are labelling systems for food and consumer products. They are a form of sustainability measurement directed at consumers, intended to make it easy to take environmental concerns into account when shopping. Some labels quantify pollution or energy consumption by way of index scores or units of measurement; others simply assert compliance with a set of practices or minimum requirements for sustainability or reduction of harm to the environment.

Ecolabelling is often voluntary, but green stickers are mandated by law in North America for major appliances and automobiles, but not our food products or me

Can you trust ecolabelling?  The pressure for green-sustainable products and food is growing as consumer demands rises.  many large corporations and former quality natural food companies have felt the need to “rubber stamp” labels or greenwash their products because it will bring them more $$$.
Food ecolabels does not mean the same as organic labelling. Many certification standards with ecolabels exist, such as Rainforest Alliance, Utz coffee, cocoa and tea, GreenPalm, Marine Stewardship Council, and many more; these are aimed at sustainable food production and good social and environmental performance, but are not organic.

Two of the largest ecolabeling groups for seafood are the Marine Stewardship Council which uses an ecolabel MSC for certified sustainable seafood and the Friend of the Sea which focuses on certifying sustainable fisheries.

Friend of the Sea
The Friend of the Sea is an NGO founded in December 2006 to conserve marine habitat and resources by means of market incentives and specific conservation projects. It is the only scheme which certifies as sustainable, with the same seal of approval, both farmed and wild-caught products. Certified products from all continents include anchovies, caviar, clams, cuttlefish, halibut, kingfish, mackerel, mulloway, mussels, prawns, salmon, seabass, seabream, shrimps, squid, sturgeon, trout, tuna, turbot. Fishmeal, fishfeed and Omega-3 Fish oil have also been certified. Sustainable seafood, products and their origins are audited onsite by international certification bodies, against Friend of the Sea criteria. Certification bodies currently auditing against Friend of the Sea criteria are Aqa, Bureau Veritas, IFQC and SGS .
The Friend of the Sea criteria is currently the only one which follows the FAO – Guidelines for the Ecolabelling of Fish and Fishery Products from Marine Capture Fisheries, by fulfilling Article 30 of the Guidelines which allows certification only of products from fisheries targeting stocks which are not overexploited.

The Marine Stewardship Council’s distinctive blue ecolabel enables consumers to identify seafood that has come from a sustainable source. The MSC program is voluntary and fisheries that are independently assessed and meet the MSC’s environmental standard can use the MSC blue ecolabel. As of April 2010 it can be found on the packaging of seafood and fresh fish counters on nearly 4,000 products in over 60 countries around the world.

The MSC standard is consistent with the ‘Guidelines for the Eco-labelling of Fish and Fishery Products from Marine Wild Capture Fisheries’ adopted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in 2005. Any fishery that wishes to become MSC certified and use the ecolabel is assessed against the MSC standard by a third party, independent certification body that has been independently accredited to perform MSC assessments by Accreditation Services International (ASI). Chain of custody certification along the supply chain from boat to point of sale ensures that seafood sold bearing the ecolabel originated from an MSC certified fishery. The Council was founded as a result of the work of the Seafood Choices Alliance.

Eat sustainably raised or caught non-endangered fish. Here is a guide to sustainable fish and sushi.

“Be Slim, trim and healthy -the secret”

Let’s get real. There is nothing “natural” about high fructose corn syrup, table sugar or brown sugar. Without man manipulating cane sugar or corn none of these products would exist.

Our waist lines would be slimmer, our brain and body chemistry would function better. Last but not least, without manmade sweeteners,  our emotional inner harmony would be improved and learning would be easier.

Sugar comes through our mouth into our digestive system then quickly passes into the blood through enzymes  in the small intestine creating the sugar high and shortly after the low.

To help curb the need to eat or drink sugary foods or drinks, so you can keep your weight and health in check, follow these tips.
Decrease or avoid breads, dried fruits coated in sugar or sweetener, crackers where sugars might be hiding. Learn to identify terms that mean added sugars on the ingredients list, including sugar, white sugar, brown sugar, cane sugar, confectioner’s sugar, corn syrup, crystallized fructose, dextrin, honey, invert sugar, maple syrup, raw sugar, beet sugar, cane sugar, corn sweeteners, agave, evaporated cane juice, glucose-fructose, granulated fructose, high fructose corn syrup, fructose, malt, molasses, aspartamine, saccharin, aspartame, sucralose, neotame, acesulfame potassium, stevia. and turbinado sugar.

If you take your coffee with sugar, try adding a small piece of cinnamon stick or vanilla bean to your cup. It adds flavor without adding caloric sweeteners.
When baking, reduce the amount of sugar in baking of muffins, breads and baked desserts. substitute apple or sweet vegetable puree like carrots  or squash blended up to replace the commercial sugar and gain vitamins, minerals and fiber.

Sweeten other food items with vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, or allspice can naturally sweeten a recipe.
Top your breakfast waffles or pancakes with fresh fruit compote instead of syrup or have a high quality green protein fruit shake to replace a meal.  Drinking a bottle of just juices is a waste of time and your waist besides being hard on your brain integration and your immune system. Giving yourself or your children a bottle of juice to drink at school on the playing field or at work will be counter productive to quality thinking and coordination.

Eliminate regular soda and caloric-sweetened beverages, by replacing them with Kombucha or green tea and lemon. High quality water is always the best and healthiest drink. Most Americans are chronically under hydrated water. “If you do not like to drink water add lemon or lime juice, a small amount of fresh fruit juice, or pieces of frozen fruit to it.

Avoid processed cereals or yogurts with added sweeteners.
As often as possible eat healthy whole organic foods or at least the freshest locally grown food you can get.

“Link trans fats and inflammatory diseases”

The escalation of chronic inflammatory diseases like heart, diabetes, weight gain, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel, many digestive and countless immune conditions like allergy, colds and flu is parallel to the growth in popularity of trans fats in the modern American diet.

Prior to 1910, dietary fats consisted primarily of butterfat, beef tallow, and lard.  In the early 1900s,  soybean oil came into use as a by product of the soybean industry. At the same time, there was not enough butterfat available for consumers. The method of hydrogenating fat and turning a liquid fat into a solid one had been discovered, and now the ingredients (soybeans) and the “need” (shortage of butter) were there. The fat industry found that hydrogenated fats was born.
Hydrogenated fat such as Crisco and Spry, sold in England, began to replace lard in the baking of bread, pies, cookies, and cakes in 1920. Production of hydrogenated fats (trans fats or saturated fats)  increased steadily until the 1960s, as processed vegetable fats replaced animal fats in the US and other western countries.

In 1988s research began to sound the alarm that trans fats could be a cause of the large increase in coronary artery disease and other inflammatory diseases. In 1994, it was estimated that trans fats caused 20,000 deaths annually in the US from heart disease. Women are more effected by saturated fats than men, but no one is immune. Leading a life sitting 6 hours plus a day will dramatically raise your chances of thickening  your belly and your arteries.

By January 2007, consumer and medical pressure and the USFDA forced Crisco to reformulate their product. of an outright ban on the sale of their product, Crisco was reformulated to meet the United States Food and Drug Administration definition of “zero grams trans fats per
Today chronic, low-grade inflammation almost always lurks beneath the surface of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart inflammation, excess weight, and many immune disorders. Low-grade inflammation has also been linked to an increased risk of cancer and Alzheimer?s disease. If you have any of the above conditions or unexplained weight gain or big emotional swings, your doctor/health practitioner can measure it with the high-sensitivity C-reactive protein or CRP test to find out if this inflammatory factor is very high. Changing what you eat and increase your exercise level can help.

"If it smells bad don’t touch or eat it-vendor ball park critical health violations"

As reported on ESPN’s,  “Outside the Lines” checked out health department inspection reports for food and beverage outlets at all 107 North American arenas and stadiums that were home to Major League Baseball, National Football League, National Hockey League and National Basketball Association teams in 2009. "228 million eggs after being linked to an outbreak of salmonella poisoning"

Do you have any of these symptoms after eating eggs?
The most common symptoms of salmonella are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within eight hours to 72 hours of eating a contaminated product. It can be life-threatening, especially to those with weakened immune systems. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said eggs from Wright County Egg in Galt, Iowa, were linked to several illnesses in Colorado, California and Minnesota. The CDC said about 200 cases of the strain of salmonella Continue reading “"228 million eggs after being linked to an outbreak of salmonella poisoning"”

"Save your change and use your pen to stop malnutrition"

Starvation kills. Malnutrition and dehydration can eliminated an individuals chance at developing a strong healthy body and mind and can cause death. 200 million children under 5 years of age are affected by malnutrition, with 90 percent living in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. And at any moment, at least 20 million children suffer from thedeadliest form of severe malnutrition. Malnutrition plays a huge role in child mortality because the immune systems of these children are less resistant to common childhood diseases. In fact, malnutrition contributes to at least one third of the eight million annual deaths of children under five of five.

Most of the damage caused by malnutrition occurs in children before they reach their second birthday.

This is the critical window of opportunity when the quality of a child’s diet has a profound, sustained impact on his or her health, physical and mental development. Breast milk is the only food babies need for the first six months. After this time, breastfeeding alone is not sufficient and the types of foods introduced into the diet are of paramount importance. Diets that do not provide the right blend of energy including high-quality protein, essential fats, and carbohydrates as well as vitamins and minerals can impair growth and development, increase the risk of death from common childhood illness, or result in life-long health consequences.

More clean water, protein, fruit and vegetables and less flour will eradicate malnutrition.

Tested strategies to address malnutrition are effective and are showing promising results in Mexico, Thailand, and Brazil, have reduced early childhood malnutrition through direct nutrition programs that ensure infants and young children from even the poorest families have access to quality foods, such as milk and eggs.

Although in Asian and African countries they want to tackle this problem by replicating successful complete food programs, the aid they are sent consists of fortified cereal blend of corn and soy only.  This GMO “food” will fill th ebelly of a starving child, but young child’s hunger, but does not provide proper nourishment.

International donor countries including the USA must end must support programs that don’t supply  the minimal nutritional needs of infants and young children.

Take action today to help Doctors Without Borders to change this food starvation policy,

Give all children a chance to grow up healthy.

Please sign the petition to help change the US policy and give what you can to help.

    "Healthy choices for the unborn"

Harmful chemicals are eaten daily by pregnant women.

This creates an automatic supply line for toxins to enter the newborns blood stream.

    A “pre-polluted baby”

Environmental Working Group (EWG) studied the umbilical cord blood of ten Americans newborns. We found nearly 300 chemicals in their cord blood, including BPA, perchlorate, fire retardants, lead, mercury, and PCBs.

Stop pre-pollution, by enacting stronger chemical laws that will protect babies like Cal. The Kid-Safe Chemicals Act may be introduced this month.

Please sign the petition before then to show Congress that Americans want protection from these chemicals. We are just 5,375 signatures away.

Please help us create a safer word for our children.

Please support the Kid-Safe Chemicals Act today by signing our petition to Congress.

The chemicals we found in our testing are increasingly linked to serious long-term health effects like learning deficits, infertility, ADHD and even childhood cancer.

Making sure our children aren’t being born pre-polluted is too important to not take action. Sign our petition today to let Congress know it is time for them to act.

Thank you for standing up to protect children like Cal and helping us put toxic chemicals on Congress’ “to do” list. It’s time.
