“14 ways to reduce breast cancer risk” Complementary Medicine Assoc.

  1. Radically reduce your intake of sugar/fructose and processed foods.
  2. Optimize your vitamin D3 level.
  3. Make intermittent fasting part of your lifestyle.
  4. Maintain a healthy body weight.
  5. Exercise at least 3 times per week.
  6. Get plenty of high-quality animal-based omega-3 fats, such as those from krill oil. Omega-3 deficiency is a common underlying factor for cancer.
  7. Drink a pint to a quart of organic green vegetable juice daily. Avoid drinking alcohol, or limit your drinks to one a day for women.
  8. Get proper sleep.
  9. Eat organic when possible, Follow a Mediterranean diet
  10. If you have children breastfeed exclusively for up to six months. Research shows this will reduce your breast cancer risk.
  11. Avoid excessive iron levels.
  12. Eat flax seeds. The phyto-estrogens protects against breast cancer more effectively than any other food we know of, but may also shrink breast tumors. Lilian Thompson’s research at the University of Toronto shows that flax seeds and estrogen-positive tumors shrank in every woman given flax seeds for three weeks.
  13. Reduce your physical and emotion stress. How stressed are you? -take the free quiz.
  14. Stay well hydrated.

Mediterranean diet  is  “abundant in plant foods, fresh fruit as the typical daily dessert, olive oil as the principal source of fat, dairy products (principally cheese and yogurt), and fish and poultry consumed in low to moderate amounts, zero to four eggs consumed weekly, red meat consumed in low amounts, and wine consumed in low to moderate amounts”. Total fat in this diet is 25% to 35% of calories, with saturated fat at 8% or less of calories.

The rosary – yoga what’s the link?

Rhythmic prayer, such as saying the rosary, seems to affect the heart rate
in the same way as doing yoga.
Research on the health benefits of prayer has shown decidedly mixed
results. When individuals pray in a ritualistic or rhythmic way, such as
saying the rosary or repeating a mantra, they can lower their heart rate.
In fact, one study showed that the cardiovascular effects of rhythmic
prayer are similar to that of doing yoga. Studies on the effects of
intercessory prayer — that is, prayer for other people — show less
optimistic results. One study even showed that people who received
intercessory prayer from other people were more likely to suffer
post-surgery complications.

HPV vaccine not so popular yeah!

Vaccination rates among adolescent girls for the cancer-causing human papillomavirus (HPV) is low, so Merck and the CDC is putting pressure education on physicians and increased advertizing so more parental education.  They are encouraging physicians to push the vaccinations on every visit. medscape.com

So is it possible that people are becoming more educated on healthier ways to improve their health? This decrease is the best news to date. Seems people are not buying the fear tactics that this vaccine is necessary for young girls and boys.

Gardasil is the commercial HPV vaccine; licensed for use in June 2006, by the FDA to Merck and Company. The vaccine “targets four strains of human papillomavirus (HPV) — HPV-6, 11, 16, and 18. HPV-16 and HPV-18 account for about 70% of all cervical cancers. HPV-6 and -11 cause about 90% of genital warts. HPV is also linked to anal cancer.”

Who can get HPV infections?

It is possible for males to get HPV infections and can pass the virus to their sex partners. HPV causes genital warts and is associated with rare cases of cancer of the penis. Particularly in gay men, HPV is linked to anal cancers. Merck is currently testing Gardasil in men, including gay men. webmd.com

The HPV vaccine contains:

  • proteins of HPV Types 6, 11, 16, and 18
  • amorphous aluminum hydroxyphosphate sulfate (adjuvant)  it causes neuron death in mice  healthsentinel.com
  • yeast protein -possible allergen for those who have yeast sensitivities or those who have an overgrowth of yeast in their body
  • sodium chloride salt
  • L-histidine – Most lists of amino acids classify Lhistidine as an essential amino acid; however, it has never been clear if Lhistidine is an essential amino acid for adults.
  • polysorbate 80  solubilizing agent that can cause severe nonimmunologic anaphylactoid reactions”  ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed
  • sodium borate – ” sodium borate, and sodium perborate are estimated to have a fatal dose from 0.1 to 0.5g/kg. These substances are toxic to all cells, and have a slow excretion rate through the kidneys. Kidney toxicity is the greatest, with liver fatty degeneration, cerebral edema, and gastroenteritis.”  cqconcepts.com

Merck does not list all ingredients in this toxic cocktail.  There is no guarantee that this vaccine is even needed. Vaccines add toxic chemicals to the body that is the reason the body launches the immune response. It is trying to get rid of these foreign substances.

“Hope for healing Vitamin D + Cancer”

“This is like the Holy Grail of cancer medicine; vitamin D produced a drop in cancer rates greater than that for quitting smoking, or indeed any other countermeasure in existence.”

~ Dennis Mangan, clinical laboratory scientist

The Vitamin D Council, a nonprofit educational corporation based in California, launches their “Vitamin D and Cancer” campaign today, presenting 20 detailed summaries of the evidence on the role of vitamin D in preventing cancer. Epidemiologist Dr. William Grant prepared the evidence-based summaries. He is the founder of the nonprofit organization, Sunlight, Nutrition and Health Research Center (SUNARC) and serves as the Science Director for the Vitamin D Council.

Some researchers believe the link between vitamin D sufficiency and a decreased risk in cancer is promising. A randomized controlled trial found a 77% reduction in all-cancer incidence when the study group supplemented with 1100 IU/day of vitamin D plus 1450 mg/day calcium. Says Dr. Grant, “Based on various studies of UVB, vitamin D and cancer to date, it appears that global cancer burden can be reduced by 15-25% if everyone had vitamin D blood levels above 40 ng/ml.”

The summaries can be found under the “Health conditions” tab on the Vitamin D Council website, or more specifically at http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/health-conditions/cancer/. The Vitamin D Council hopes the campaign will spread more awareness about the importance of vitamin D sufficiency and the dangers of vitamin D deficiency.

“Death by worms”

The hookworm, the whipworm and the spiral threadworm cause mortality and death  to one billionpeople across the globe

New parasitic worm discovery could help 1 billion people worldwide.
Scientists have discovered why some people may be protected from harmful parasitic worms naturally while others cannot in what could lead to new therapies for up to one billion people worldwide.
The University of Manchester researchers have, for the first time, identified

Mucin-5AC as a protein that in humans is encoded by the MUC5AC gene to be the key component of the mucus found in the guts of humans and animals is toxic to worms.

Dr Sumaira Hasnain, the lead researcher said “For the first time, we have discovered that a single component of the mucus barrier, the Muc5ac mucin, is essential for worm expulsion.
Learning who is and isn’t susceptible to parasitic worms can lead to new treatments for people with chronic worm infections.

How does Muc5ac mucin effect cells?

  • The abnormal expression of gastric M1/MUC5AC mucin in precancerous lesions and colon cancer.
  • Cigarette smoke when it enters lung tissue induces MUC5AC mucin overproduction via tumor necrosis factor-α-converting enzyme in human airway epithelial (NCI-H292) cells.
  • During inflammation Nitric oxide (NO) is generally increased in airway diseases. This causes NO to increase the secretion of mucin from the goblet cell and submucosal glands.

“These parasitic worms live in the gut, which is protected by a thick layer of mucus,” explained Dr David Thornton, from the University’s Wellcome Trust Center for Cell Matrix Research. “The mucus barrier is not just slime, but a complex mixture of salts, water and large ‘sugar-coated’ proteins called mucins that give mucus its gel-like properties.

By creating more mucous study mice were able to expel this whipworm from the gut. Importantly, the mucus from these mice contained the mucin, Muc5ac. This mucin is rarely present in the gut, but when it is, it alters the physical properties of the mucus gel.
Mice unable to genetically produce Muc5ac were unable to expel the worms, despite having a strong immune response against these parasites. This resulted in long-term infections.

Muc5ac is also essential for the efficient expulsion from the gut like hookworm, and the spiral threadworm. Together, these worms cause mortality and morbidity in up to one billion people across the globe.

“A recipe for a quality life”

It is about Quality in

75 per cent of Americans are focused on eating more whole grains

What is a whole grain?
A whole grain is a grain unprocessed and straight from Mother Nature.
They include: amaranth, barley, brown rice, bulgar wheat, couscous, millet, oatmeal, popcorn (seed), quinoa, sorghum and triticale (a hybrid of rye and wheat whole oats, whole rye, wild rice (a blend of seeds) and whole wheat.

To be a whole grain it must still contain the bran and germ, when it is processed the brain and germ are removed, leaving behind the white endosperm. This causes many nutrients to be left behind.
To try to make up for the bleeding of nutrients through processing, companies will throw in a sprinkle of vitamins and call their product “enriched”. There is nothing enriching about this scam. 25% of their original protein content and 17 other essential nutrients are usually lost.

Whole grain breads pack more protein, fiber, vitamins (B vitamins and vitamin E), and minerals (magnesium and iron), as well as some antioxidants not found in junk foods.

The U.S. government recommends that half of your daily grains servings should be whole grains. That’s at least three servings of whole grains per day.

Even desserts can be made more nutritious using whole grains and a natural sugar.

Help Finding whole grain products

Until recently, finding whole grain products was difficult. Is this product whole grain, or simply refined flour with caramel coloring? Does 100% wheat mean it’s whole grain? What does multigrain really mean?
Help from the whole grains council
The Whole Grains Council is helping consumers to find and eat more whole grains
Look for the Whole Grain Stamp, a special packaging symbol now on hundreds and hundreds of popular products. Check out the list of “Stamped Products” here on our website.
At Restaurants, using our list of food outlets that offer at least one whole grain choice at every meal.
For Foodservice, using our new foodservice list. If you run a restaurant or cafeteria, you need to know where you can buy bulk containers of whole grains – not the usual consumer-size products. We can help.

“Protect thyroid from radiation”

Women Caution:  Protect your thyroid from radiation

Mammograms and dental X-rays are useful tools for diagnosis, but as Dr. OZ pointed out in a recent show you must speak up to protect your thyroid from excess radiation.

Dr. Oz had a show on the fastest growing cancer in women, thyroid cancer.  He demonstrated that on the apron the dentist puts on you for your dental x-rays there is a little flap that can be lifted up and wrapped around your neck.  Many dentists don’t bother to use it.

There is something called a “thyroid guard” for use specifically during mammograms.   yearly mammogram yesterday. I felt a little silly, but I asked about the guard and sure enough,

Technicians usually have one in a drawer, but do not even ask if you want to use it.You have to take the lead and ask for this added protection.

Approximately 65 percent of the U. S. population is overweight; 30 percent is clinically obese. Research is pointing to the fact that an under active thyroid might be the number one cause of weight problems, especially among women, in the US today.

Protecting and improving thyroid function may be helped by

  1. Eat an extra fruit and an extra vegetable every day.
  2. Drink more nutrient-packed beverages. Many people sip coffee, soda pop or fruit-flavored drinks throughout the day-yet none of these beverages offer much nutritionally. Drink more bioactive water, fresh vegetable and fruit juices,
  3. Eat whole grains Regularly eating whole grains as part of a healthful diet could reduce heart disease risk by as much as 26 percent. Forty studies that looked at 20 different types of cancer deemed whole grains a winner too. Regularly eating whole-grain foods as part of a low-fat diet reduced the risk of many diseases. Experts believe three servings of whole-grain foods a day can make an impact.

“US bearded women vs banning BPA”

Maine Gov. Paul LePage recently said that in a worst case scenario BPA exposure may give women “little beards.”
Seems US puts head in the chemical sand as EU moves to protect its people from 6 more known toxins including BPA.

The European Union recently announced that it will ban six toxic substances under its Registration, Evaluation, Authorization & Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) program, reports Chemical & Engineering News. These The phase out affects three plastic softening chemicals: bis (2-ethylexyl) phthalate; benzyl butyl phthalate; and dibutyl phthalate.

The regulation also bans the flame retardant hexabromocyclododecane because the compound is persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic. Another affected substance is 5-tert-butyl-2,4,6-trinito-m-xylene, also known as musk xylene, which the EU characterizes as very persistent and very bioaccumulative.

The sixth chemical banned is 4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane, used in some epoxy resins and adhesives and as an intermediate in the manufacture of other substances. The EU classifies this compound as a substance which should be regarded as carcinogenic to humans.

All are known to be toxic to the human reproductive systems. The EU already prohibits use of these three phthalates in children’s toys.

The landmark move, which includes phasing out three plastic softening chemicals and a flame retardant, stands out in glowing contrast to the U.S.’s chemical love affair and denial system. The US refuses to consider a ban on Bisphenol A (BPA) in spite of the research on the controversial chemical. This chemical additives is found in American’s tissues at levels twice as high as levels found in Canadian’s.

But not to worry, says Maine’s Gov. Paul LePage. The worst that could happen is that BPA exposure might cause women to start growing “little beards.”

The European Union will phase out the use of three phthalates, a flame retardant, a synthetic musk, and a compound used in epoxy resins and adhesives. The move, announced Feb. 17, 2010  by the European Commission, marks the first time the EU has banned substances under its Registration, Evaluation, Authorization & Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) program.

Sale or use of the six chemicals will cease in three to five years unless a company obtains authorization from the commission.

To use or sell any of these substances, a business would have to demonstrate that safety measures are in place to control risks adequately or that the benefits to the economy and society outweigh the risks of using the compound.

The phase out affects three plastic softening chemicals: bis (2-ethylexyl) phthalate; benzyl butyl phthalate; and dibutyl phthalate. They are targeted because of reproductive toxicity. The EU already prohibits use of these three phthalates in children’s toys.

“Today’s decision is an example of the successful implementation of REACH and of how sustainability can be combined with competitiveness,” says Antonio Tajani, European Commission vice president for industry and entrepreneurship. “It will encourage industry to develop alternatives and foster innovation.”

“The substances included in the list, which have been on the table for many years, reflects ongoing discussions by regulatory authorities and industry,” the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) says. “CEFIC provides advice to industry to help understand the science-based process, which we monitor, should they decide to go forward to seek authorization for listed substances,”

“Bubbles under breast skin cancer risk”

The old saying “Beauty is only skin deep”, but cancer can go deeper

applies to breast implant cancer risk too.

U.S. government health officials are investigating a possible link between breast implants and a very rare form of cancer known as anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) after reviewing a handful of cases reported over the last 13 years.

ALC attacks the lymph nodes and skin, and has been reported in the scar tissue that grows around implants. So far, the data suggest women with silicone or saline-gel breast implants “may have a very small but significant risk of ALCL in the scar capsule adjacent to the implant,” the agency said.

The body considers the implant as a foreign substance and sends immune boosting cells to the area around the scar tissue to get rid of it. If it cannot the cell mutation occurs and this can lead to cancer.

The cancer, anaplastic large-cell lymphoma, involves the immune system. It is not breast cancer. It is usually a systemic disease, but in the cases linked to implants, the lymphoma grew in the breast, usually in the capsule of scar tissue that formed around the implant. The cases were discovered because women developed symptoms long after they had healed from the implant surgery lumps, pain, asymmetry of the breasts, fluid buildup and swelling.

Anaplastic large-cell lymphoma begins after scar tissue is formed around the implant:
lumps, pain, asymmetry of the breasts, fluid buildup and swelling.

In some cases simply removing the implant and scar tissue gets rid of the disease, but some women might need chemotherapy and radiation, said Dr. William Maisel, the chief scientist and deputy director for science in the drug agency’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. He said there was some evidence, though not conclusive, that the form of this lymphoma found in implant patients was less aggressive than the usual type.

“We need more data and are asking that health-care professionals tell us about any confirmed cases they identify,” said Dr. William Maisel, chief scientist in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s device unit.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is asking doctors to report all cases of the cancer so the agency can better understand the association. The agency is aware of just 60 cases of the disease worldwide among the estimated five million to 10 million women with implants.
This type of lymphoma in the breast is normally found in only 3 in 100 million women who do not have implants.

The devices are marketed in the U.S. by Allergan Inc. and Mentor Corp.
