"Benedryl and its’ cousins maybe bad mojo for long term users"

“Researchers … conducted a six-year observational study, evaluating 1,652 Indianapolis area African-Americans over the age of 70 who had normal cognitive function when the study began … ‘[Taking one anticholinergic significantly increased an individual’s risk of developing mild cognitive impairment and taking two of these drugs doubled this risk.'” Reported in Physorg.org.

Why were elderly people allowed to take part in this study?  It disappoints and angers me.

Over the counter (OTC) drugs like Benadryl (or Dimedrol in other countries), Dramamine, Excedrin PM, Nytol, Sominex, Tylenol PM, Midol PM and Advil PM and some Unisom products if used regularly can cause decreased brain function in those over 70 years of age.  Other anticholinergic prescription drugs, such as Paxil, Detrol, Demerol and Elavil are are made with the same antihistamine Diphenhydramine like their OTC cousins.

How do these drugs work?

These drugs, called anticholinergics, block acetylcholine, a nervous system neurotransmitter. The body uses neurotransmitters to speed or slow the transmission of nerve signals throughout the brain and nervous system.

Despite Benedryl being one of the oldest antihistamines on the market it is more effective than even some of the latest prescription drugs. Consequently, it is frequently used when an allergic reaction requires fast, effective reversal of the often dangerous effects of a massive histamine release. Its active ingredient Diphenhydramine works by blocking the effect of histamine at H1 receptor sites. This results in effects such as the increase of vascular smooth muscle contraction, thus reducing the redness, hyperthermia and edema that occurs during an inflammatory reaction. In addition, by blocking the H1 receptor on peripheral nociceptors (pain receptors), diphenhydramine decreases their sensitization and thus reduces itching from an allergic reaction.

The effects of Diphenhydramine the active ingredient in many antihistamine compounds include:

  • Mouth/throat – dryness
  • Endocrine – change in appetite
  • Heart – increased heart rate (tachycardia or hypertension)
  • Liver – toxicity in very large doses
  • Brain/Memory/Nervous System –  profound drowsiness, difficulty concentrating, short-term memory loss, hallucinations, dizziness, irritability, delirium, motor impairment (ataxia), restlessness, restless leg syndrome, clouded thinking, difficult mood changes, twitching may be delayed until the drowsiness begins to cease, confusion
  • Vision-visual disturbances, abnormal sensitivity to bright light (photophobia), pupil dilation,  blurred vision at nearpoint owing to lack of accommodation (cycloplegia),  redness, dryness and yellowing of eyes
  • Respiration– irregular breathing, decreased respiration
  • Skin – itchy skin, decreased body temperature (generally in the hands and/or feet), flushing
  • Bladder/Bowel function – urinary retention, constipation, nausea, vaginal dryness,
  • Sexual -erectile dysfunction, excitability, decreased libido
  • Atypical sensations – sense of heaviness, hearing imbalances

"High levels of toxic cadmium found in Disney, Walmart and other kids toys"

It is all about how cheap we can make cheap jewelry and toys.

If it works and no one complains about the toxicity level of certain metals used then keep doing it. China’s low-cost jewelry makers, it was an open trade secret: The metal cadmium is shiny, strong and malleable at low temperatures, regardless of its health hazards. And it’s cheap.It is being used now to keep the cost down since lead was banned a few years ago. Profit at all costs above childrens health. Cancer, learning disabilities and permanent IQ loss are some of the known side effects.  Tao Xinyao, a metals expert who works in the Yiwu factory for jewelry maker Neoglory, said she noticed an upserge in the use of cadmium around 2003, when prices of the metal hit a low. Jewelry makers discovered they could work with cadmium at much lower temperatures than they could zinc, the most common nontoxic material, she said.

The Associated Press bought and tested more than 100 pieces of childrens jewelry made in China

and sold at Wal-mart and other retailers around the country.

Cadmium content of a few toys

"Best Friend's" toxic jewelry pendants

Deadly costume jewelry

12% of the cheap jewelry trinkets contained at least 10 %

Disney’s “Princess and the Frog” pendants -25 to 35 %

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer charm – 91 %

Best Friend’s Bracelet charms  – 89 and 91 %

Signs of cadmium overdose

“Acute exposure to cadmium fumes may cause flu like symptoms including chills, fever, and muscle ache

Severe tracheo-bronchitis, pneumonitis, and pulmonary edema. Symptoms of inflammation may start hours after the exposure and include cough, dryness and irritation of the nose and throat, headache, dizziness, weakness, fever, chills, and chest pain.

Inhaling cadmium-laden dust quickly leads to respiratory tract and kidney failure..

Ingestion of any significant amount of cadmium causes immediate poisoning and damage to the liver and the kidneys.

Compounds containing cadmium are also carcinogenic.

Bones become soft (osteomalacia), lose bone mineral density (osteoporosis) and become weaker. This causes the pain in the joints and the back, and also increases the risk of fractures. In extreme cases of cadmium poisoning, mere body weight causes a fracture.

The kidneys lose their function to remove acids from the blood in proximal renal tubular dysfunction. The kidney damage inflicted by cadmium poisoning is irreversible and does not heal over time. The proximal renal tubular dysfunction creates low phosphate levels in the blood (hypophosphatemia), causing muscle weakness and sometimes coma. The dysfunction also causes gout, a form of arthritis due to the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints because of high acidity of the blood (hyperuricemia). Another side effect is increased levels of chloride in the blood (hyperchloremia). The kidneys can also shrink up to 30%.

Other patients lose their sense of smell (anosmia).”

Children as well as adults are susceptible to cadmium poisoning.

"Camp Lejeune sees rise in male and female breast cancer"

Cover up by Marine Corp toxic dump
The Marine Corps still hasn’t notified everyone who drank tainted water at Camp Lejeune of the health risks like many kinds of cancer including male breast cancer, birth defects and miscarriages all coming from their own drinking water.malebreastcancer

Seems that dry cleaning chemicals were dumped into at least two water distribution systems at Camp Lejeune. Many Marines, sailors, their families and civilian employees have been affected by the contamination. This water tested positive for tetrachloroethylene, vinyl chloride, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene. These chemicals are commonly used in dry cleaning.
Marine Corps had known about these chemicals in the base water supply since 1980. Mike parents were consuming the contaminated water in 1967, when they were expecting him. He was a small baby, born with a persistent skin rash, and developed other health problems as he grew up. His parents, along with many other base residents, have developed more than the average number of health problems. Camp LeJeune’s water supply was contaminated for 30 years. This preventable water problem and the resulting health disaster may have affected an estimated 800,000 to 1 million former Marines and their families.
This total disregard for human life is appalling.
Seems Congress will have to demand that all the old records be handed over and the problem be responsibly addressed. Since the Marine Corps had their own hazardous material regulations and potable water standards in place dating back to 1963, but chose not to follow them. IF found guilty must be help responsible for the care of all these victims. This type of dumping is preventable.

“Potential risks of squalene in flu vaccine worse than the flu"

This frenzy over upping the number of vaccines to supposedly prevent a host of nasty diseases –at what price?

“North American children are now the most vaccinated on earth. Since 1980, Canadian vaccine schedules have more than doubled the types of vaccines given; for the first 4-6 yrs of life alone, Public Health now recommends 43 doses of thirteen different vaccines. The first 8 doses are given in four shots at two months of age. It’s been declared that today’s children are the first generation whose parents will outlive them. Why?

H1N1 virus (Swine Flu)
H1N1 virus (Swine Flu)

Today, 10% of Canadian children have life threatening afflictions. In the last 25 years, concurrent with vaccine increase, there’ve been huge declines in children’s health in many categories:

* Autism – increased over 1000 times in less than one generation;

* Juvenile Diabetes – 104% increase since 1980; * Anaphylactic Food Allergies – doubled in the last decade;

* All types of Allergies – increased nearly six times;

* Obesity – now almost 20%, 3 times the prevalence in 1980;

*Attention Deficit Disorder – now almost 10%. (1)

Dr. Sherri Tenpenny, DO in the May 1, 2006 issue of NewsWithViews.com stated, “Multiple studies published in highly reputable publications have documented that flu shots are ineffective in all ages.” Besides being ineffective the adjuvant the biochemical catalyst added to the vaccine can pose further health risks.

After the Gulf War vets returned with a cascade of immuno -reactions called Gulf War syndrome.included “arthritis, fibromyalgia, lymphadenopathy, rashes, photosensitive rashes, malar rashes, chronic fatigue, chronic headaches, abnormal body hair loss, non-healing skin lesions, aphthous ulcers, dizziness, weakness, memory loss, seizures, mood changes, neuropsychiatric problems, anti-thyroid effects, anemia, elevated ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate), systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis, ALS, Raynaud’s phenomenon, Sjorgren’s syndrome, chronic diarrhea, night sweats and low-grade fever.” research has attributed these symptoms to three batches of immunizations using squalen based adjuvant.(1)

squalen adjuvant in flu vaccine
squalen adjuvant in flu vaccine

Squalene is an oil-based adjuvant compound called MF-59. The main function of the adjuvant is to supercharge the live or dead virus(s) main ingredient in the diluted vaccine to make them more potent and kick start the response to the flu in the body. Two H1N1 vaccines being developed by companies Novartis and GlaxoSmithKline are adding squalene adjuvants to boost immunogenicity and dramatically reduce the amount of viral antigen needed. This translates to much faster production of desired vaccine quantities. Novartis’s proprietary squalene adjuvant for their H1N1 vaccine is MF59. Glaxo’s is ASO3. MF59 has yet to be approved by the FDA for use in any U.S. vaccine.

Natural Squalene as an oil molecule is native to your body. It is found throughout your nervous system and brain. In fact, olive oil will bless you with natural squalene and by consuming it will build your immune system as long as you are not sensitive or allergic to it.

Why does the body go to war with injected squalene compounds?

Injection is an abnormal route of entry which incites your immune system to attack all the squalene in your body, not just the vaccine adjuvant. Squalene compounded vaccines has been fingered at a possible culprit in the post Gulf War multiple health issues that these veterans continue to suffer. MF59 has yet to be approved by the FDA for use in any U.S. vaccine.

Flu vaccines can also contain a number of chemical toxins, including ethylene glycol (antifreeze), formaldehyde, phenol (carbolic acid) and even antibiotics like Neomycin and streptomycin. In addition to the viruses and aluminum and squalene. Vaccinations are biochemical cocktails for supression of the native immune systems that will not is help build immunity to potentially harmful organisms that cause illness and disease.

However, your body’s immune system is already designed to do this in response to organisms that invade your body naturally. Build your immunity by eating organic healthy raw and steamed fruits and seasonal veggies, staying well hydrated, getting plenty of sleep and exercise in fresh air.

"Sunscreen guide from EWG -protecting you and your family"

More than a million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the U.S. every year. The incidence of malignant melanoma, the most dangerous form of the disease, is escalating. Effective sunscreens are crucial to public health. But EWG’s investigation reveals that they may be hard to find: * 59 sunscreens with SPFs from 55-100+ might tempt you to stay out longer in the sun, but they block just 1-2% more sunburn rays than an SPF 30 sunscreen. * Hundreds of all-day moisturizers advertise SPF protection, but 1 in 5 offers little protection from harmful UVA rays. Some break down well before the day’s end. A surprising new government report attributes an increasing incidence of malignant melanoma among people who work indoors to UVA rays shining through windows onto unprotected skin. * Lip cancer is most common on the bottom lip where sun exposure is most direct. Two of 5 lip balms offer poor UVA protection. One plus for 2009: 19% fewer sunscreens contain oxybenzone, a hormone disruptor approved by FDA as an active ingredient in sunscreen.

Few sunscreens live up to their advertising claims, and the federal government is powerless to make them. The federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been promising to regulate sunscreens since 1978, when gasoline was 63 cents a gallon and the BeeGees’ “Saturday Night Fever” topped the charts.

Thirty plus years has gone by without action. Tired of delays and excuses?

Take action: ask FDA to do its job and issue some sunscreen regulations with teeth. email FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg.

In the meantime, EWG’s research team has created this comprehensive guide listing 82 recommended products and other sun safety tips to help you and your family have fun in the sun safely.

Check out your favorites and see how they rate. You will probably be as surprised as I was. Thanks so much for this detailed evaluation.

From the American Academy Of Environmental Medicine

Immediate Moratorium On Genetically Modified Foods May 19, 2009

The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) today released its position paper on Genetically Modified foods stating that “GM foods pose a serious health risk” and calling for a moratorium on GM foods. Citing several animal studies, the AAEM concludes “there is more than a casual association between GM foods and adverse health effects” and that “GM foods pose a serious health risk in the areas of toxicology, allergy and immune function, reproductive health, and metabolic, physiologic and genetic health.”

– Dr. Amy L. Dean, D.O. Public Relations Chair Member, Board of Directors American Academy of Environmental Medicine 734-213-4901 environmentalmed@yahoo.com

The AAEM calls for:

* A moratorium on GM food, implementation of immediate long term safety testing and labeling of GM food.
* Physicians to educate their patients, the medical community and the public to avoid GM foods.
* Physicians to consider the role of GM foods in their patients’ disease processes.
* More independent long term scientific studies to begin gathering data to investigate the role of GM foods on human health.

“Physicians are probably seeing the effects in their patients, but need to know how to ask the right questions,” said Dr. Jennifer Armstrong, President of AAEM. “The most common foods in North America which are consumed that are GMO are corn, soy, canola, and cottonseed oil.”

The AAEM’s position paper on Genetically Modified foods can be found at http:aaemonline.org/gmopost.html.

AAEM is an international association of physicians and other professionals dedicated to addressing the clinical aspects of environmental health. AAEM The American Academy of Environmental Medicine was founded in 1965, and is an international association of physicians and other professionals interested in the clinical aspects of humans and their environment. The Academy is interested in expanding the knowledge of interactions between human individuals and their environment, as these may be demonstrated to be reflected in their total health. The AAEM provides research and education in the recognition, treatment and prevention of illnesses induced by exposures to biological and chemical agents encountered in air, food and water.

Mouthwashes increase health risks

mouthwashTo combat bad breath, mouth rinses take one of two approaches. Some mouthwashes kill the smelly bacteria, while others neutralize or mask the odors produced by sulfur compounds. Antibacterial mouth rinses, as well as those containing chemicals that neutralize odors, do temporarily control bad breath, but products containing chlorhexidine gluconate a substance that kills bacteria, resulted in noticeable but temporary staining of the tongue and teeth. The discoloration can look like tobacco staining, a dark brownish color.(1)

In one study plaque accumulation and gingival condition were recorded using plaque index and gingival index. On the basis of mean baseline plaque and gingival scores, subjects were allocated to four different groups, using their assigned products twice a day, before bed and after breakfast. The results of this clinical study indicate that better therapeutic efficacy can be achieved using gels for treating oral infections than conventional treatments using mouthwash. (2)
Risks from using alcohol based mouthwashes
In two well documented studies researchers have found that the daily use of commercial mouthwashes with a low pH increase the risk of oral, throat cancer and stomach upset, besides greatly increasing teeth sensitivity by eroding tooth enamel and higher levels of bad breath according to recent studies.

In thew first study, at the Division of Restorative Dentistry in Bristol, U.K., researchers found that use of low pH mouthwashes cause erosion of dental enamel and increased sensitivity in teeth to hot or cold changes. (3)

In another study researchers from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil evaluated control studies from 1998 to 2002 of 309 patients with oral cancer of the mouth and pharynx and 468 controls matched by sex and age. Results show that daily mouthwash use was strongly associated with cancer of the pharynx and also associated with cancer of the mouth.

Detailed information on smoking, alcohol consumption, schooling, and oral health and hygiene were obtained through interviews.

Oral cancer is linked to bleeding gums and failure to have dental But not to he use of full dental prosthesis.
Mouthwash works for a short period of time by killing lots of germs, but because of the high alcohol content the mouth dries. A dry mouth means the salivary glands are dry so the amount of saliva produced is low and thus they are unable to wash away bacteria. This results in even high production of bacteria and even bad breath. This overproduction of bacteria stress the mucous lining of your mouth, throat and stomach and can decrease your immune system your immune system and require your liver to work even harder to detoxify the body and produce the vitamins and minerals your body needs to stay healthy.(3)

Recommendations:
The team strongly suggests that low pH mouthwashes should not be considered for long term or continuous use and should never be used prior to brushing.

Conclusions

There are no substitutes for good oral hygiene and quality dental care. Your immune, dental. digestive and immune system depends on it.

New mother feeling very light headed, tired have your heart checked

New Moms if you have any of the following reoccurring symptoms please call your doctor.

Symptoms

* Fatigue
* Feeling of racing heart or skipping beats (palpitations)New moms heart disease -Peripartum Cardiomyopathy
* Increased night-time urination (nocturia)
* Shortness of breath with activity and when laying flat
* Swelling of the ankles
Doctor’s exam may show Peripartum Cardiomyopathy

liver enlargment
neck veins swollen.
low Blood pressure worse stands up
Heart enlargement,
lungs/veins to lung congested
cardiac output/functioning decreased
heart failure

A real time case
Tanya Ginther, 26, had given birth to her second child just two months earlier, so she thought it was only natural to feel tired, and out of breath. But packing the car one day in the garage attached to her Bismarck, N.D., home, Tanya collapsed her heart had stopped without warning – a cardiac arrest.

Doctors later determined Tanya was suffering from a mysterious condition called Peripartum Cardiomyopathy (PC).
PC strikes as many as 3,000 new mothers in the United States every year, is characterized by symptoms that include fatigue and shortness of breath. No one is certain of its cause or why Peripartum Cardiomyopathy develops.

“The heart muscle weakens in the last months of pregnancy,” Sharonne Hayes, a doctor at the Mayo Clinic, told ABC News. “We don’t know what causes it. It could be inflammation, or a virus, or the changes in hormones.”

At a Bismarck, N.D., hospital, Tanya Ginther’s heart stopped, again and again. Doctors, shocking her back to life each time, She needed a heart pump. In a last attempt to save her life, the Mayo Clinic dispatched one of its “air ambulances,” a Learjet equipped with the latest emergency medical equipment, to lift Tanya to its hospital in Rochester, Minn.

But at an altitude of 30,000 feet, Tanya’s heart failed yet again. Today she is fine. She and her family are grateful she is one of the fortunate ones to survive. (1)

Cardiomyopathy occurs when there is damage to the heart. As a result, the heart muscle becomes weak and cannot pump blood efficiently. Decreased heart function affects the lungs, liver, and other body systems. Peripartum cardiomyopathy is a form of dilated cardiomyopathy in which no other cause of heart dysfunction (weakened heart) can be identified.

In the United States, Peripartum Cardiomyopathy complicates 1 in every 1,300 – 4,000 deliveries. It may occur in childbearing women of any age, but it is most common after age 30.

Risk factors include obesity, having a personal history of cardiac disorders such as myocarditis, use of certain medications, smoking, alcoholism, multiple pregnancies, being African American, and being malnourished. (2)
