“Sleep it off, not by the TV”

The effects of Sleep loss on weight

10 overweight men and women  were put on a low calorie diet.

1/2 the group sleep for only 5 1/2 hours per night

!/2 slept 8 1/2 hours per night

After 3 months the groups switched the number of hours they were allowed to sleep

Results the effects of sleep deprivation on human body

  • no effect on weight lost
  • all lost 55 per cent less fat
  • 60 per cent more lean body ( mainly muscle) mass
  • increase in appetite due to increase in  hormone ghrelin
  • lower metabolic rate
  • increase tendency to gain weight or be obese

Both hormones leptin and ghrelin influence appetite. When you have sleepless night do you often feel that you cannot get enough food to satisfy your hunger the next day?no matter what you ate you never felt full or satisfied?

Sleep and sleep disruption do remarkable things to the body and some weight fluctuation can be attributed to the changes in the hormones leptin and ghrelin caused by stress.

Sleep in a quiet dark room and try to get 8 hours of solid uninterrupted sleep.  Good dreaming!

“US bearded women vs banning BPA”

Maine Gov. Paul LePage recently said that in a worst case scenario BPA exposure may give women “little beards.”
Seems US puts head in the chemical sand as EU moves to protect its people from 6 more known toxins including BPA.

The European Union recently announced that it will ban six toxic substances under its Registration, Evaluation, Authorization & Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) program, reports Chemical & Engineering News. These The phase out affects three plastic softening chemicals: bis (2-ethylexyl) phthalate; benzyl butyl phthalate; and dibutyl phthalate.

The regulation also bans the flame retardant hexabromocyclododecane because the compound is persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic. Another affected substance is 5-tert-butyl-2,4,6-trinito-m-xylene, also known as musk xylene, which the EU characterizes as very persistent and very bioaccumulative.

The sixth chemical banned is 4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane, used in some epoxy resins and adhesives and as an intermediate in the manufacture of other substances. The EU classifies this compound as a substance which should be regarded as carcinogenic to humans.

All are known to be toxic to the human reproductive systems. The EU already prohibits use of these three phthalates in children’s toys.

The landmark move, which includes phasing out three plastic softening chemicals and a flame retardant, stands out in glowing contrast to the U.S.’s chemical love affair and denial system. The US refuses to consider a ban on Bisphenol A (BPA) in spite of the research on the controversial chemical. This chemical additives is found in American’s tissues at levels twice as high as levels found in Canadian’s.

But not to worry, says Maine’s Gov. Paul LePage. The worst that could happen is that BPA exposure might cause women to start growing “little beards.”

The European Union will phase out the use of three phthalates, a flame retardant, a synthetic musk, and a compound used in epoxy resins and adhesives. The move, announced Feb. 17, 2010  by the European Commission, marks the first time the EU has banned substances under its Registration, Evaluation, Authorization & Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) program.

Sale or use of the six chemicals will cease in three to five years unless a company obtains authorization from the commission.

To use or sell any of these substances, a business would have to demonstrate that safety measures are in place to control risks adequately or that the benefits to the economy and society outweigh the risks of using the compound.

The phase out affects three plastic softening chemicals: bis (2-ethylexyl) phthalate; benzyl butyl phthalate; and dibutyl phthalate. They are targeted because of reproductive toxicity. The EU already prohibits use of these three phthalates in children’s toys.

“Today’s decision is an example of the successful implementation of REACH and of how sustainability can be combined with competitiveness,” says Antonio Tajani, European Commission vice president for industry and entrepreneurship. “It will encourage industry to develop alternatives and foster innovation.”

“The substances included in the list, which have been on the table for many years, reflects ongoing discussions by regulatory authorities and industry,” the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) says. “CEFIC provides advice to industry to help understand the science-based process, which we monitor, should they decide to go forward to seek authorization for listed substances,”

“LOXL2 enzyme spreads cancer”

Did you know?
90 percent of cancer-related deaths occur because a tumor migrates around the patient’s body.
A key to unlock metatasis

The LOXL2 enzyme activity has been linked to the metastasis of a variety of different cancers, including breast, esophageal, colon, and squamous cell cancers.

Researchers analysis of breast cancer patients, found poor survival rates and the spread of some cancers  was linked to high levels of the LOXL2 enzyme. This enzyme  has been linked to the early stages of metastasis of these cancers into the bloodstream.

Around 47,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in the UK each year and around 12,000 die from the disease.

Recent studies have shown that the lifetime risk of the disease for women is now one in eight.

Experts blamed lifestyle factors, including obesity and drinking alcohol, for fuelling the rise.

Women are also more likely to have children later in life and fewer offspring, which influences the risk.

In the latest study, published in the journal Cancer Research, experts found that LOXL2 promotes the spread of breast cancer through the way it controls two proteins, TIMP1 and MMP9.

In the mice studies, antibodies and chemicals were used to block LOXL2 activity. This prevented breast cancer from metastasizing to other tissues.
These findings are important are an important role in developing a test to try and predict the possible spread of cancer and possible patient outcomes.
Director of Research and Policy at Breast Cancer Campaign, Arlene Wilkie, said, “by using LOXL2 to predict whose cancer will spread and drugs to block the enzyme to stop this from happening, many more lives could be saved.”

This laboratory research shows great promise and we look forward to seeing how it translates into patients.”

“Lavender oil destroys fungal infections”

Fungi are increasingly resistant to drugs. It is urgent to explore alternatives to combat fungal infections.  Lavender (Lavendula) is an herbal plant whose essential oil have been used for centuries to heal skin tissue from burns, often used as a mild antidepressant and for its anticeptic qualities and as an exotic edible condiment. Finally modern western medical research is being forced to study how it works for its significant clinical benefits.

Lavender oil derived from pressing the leaves and distilling the essence from the volatile oils could be used to combat the increasing incidence of antifungal-resistant infections, according to a study published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology.

The essential oil shows a potent antifungal effect against strains of fungi responsible for common skin and nail infections.

Scientists from the University of Coimbra in Portugal distilled lavender oil from the Lavandula viridis L’Her shrub that grows in southern Portugal. The oil was tested against a range of pathogenic fungi and was found to be lethal to a range of skin-pathogenic strains, known as dermatophytes, as well as various species of Candida.
Dermatophytes cause infections of the skin, hair and nails as they use the keratin within these tissues to obtain nutrients. They are responsible for conditions such as Athletes’ foot, ringworm and can also lead to scalp and nail infections.
Candida species coexist with most healthy individuals without causing problems but may cause mucocutaneous candidosis – or thrush – in some people. In immunocompromised patients, Candida species are able to cause serious infection if the fungal cells escape into the blood stream.
Currently, there are relatively few types of antifungal drugs to treat infections and those that are available often have side effects. Professor Ligia Salgueiro and Professor Eugenia Pinto who led this study explained why novel fungicides are urgently needed.
“In the last few years there has been an increase in the incidence of fungal diseases, particularly among immunocompromised patients,” they said.
“Unfortunately there is also increasing resistance to antifungal drugs. Research by our group and others has shown that essential oils may be cheap, efficient alternatives that have minimal side effects.”
Essential oils distilled from the Lavandula genus of lavender plants are already used widely, particularly in the food, perfume and cosmetic industries. Studies of the biological activities of these oils suggest Lavandula oils have sedative and antispasmodic properties as well being potent antimicrobials and antioxidants.

This group has demonstrated that these oils work by destroying fungal cells by damaging the cell membrane. They believe that further research into the mechanisms by which this essential oil works could have significant clinical benefits.

“Lavandula oil shows wide-spectrum antifungal activity and is highly potent. This is a good starting point for developing this oil for clinical use to manage fungal infections. What is now required is clinical trials to evaluate how our in vitro work translates in vivo,” said Professor Salgueiro.

This group has demonstrated that these oils work by destroying fungal cells by damaging the cell membrane. They believe that further research into the mechanisms by

Other uses for lavender include lavender oil used for inhalation therapy to treat headaches, nervous disorders, and exhaustion. Herbalists treat skin ailments, such as fungal infections (like candidiasis), wounds, eczema, and acne, with lavender oil. It is also used in a healing bath for joint and muscle pain. One study evaluating treatments for children with eczema founded it was therapeutic touch from the mother that improved symptoms; in other words, massage with and without essential oils (including lavender) both reduced the dry, scaly skin lesions. Another study found that lavender oil may improve pain control after surgery. Fifty patients undergoing breast biopsy surgery received either oxygen supplemented with lavender oil or oxygen alone. Patients in the lavender group reported better pain control than patients in the control group.

“EWG finds chromium 6 in city H20”

Dear Compmed Readers,

Take action today!

In December, Environmental Working Group (EWG) published the first national investigation of the suspected carcinogen chromium-6 — also known as hexavalent chromium — in drinking water in 35 cities around the country. Recently, Senators Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., and Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., introduced Senate Bill 79, the Protecting Pregnant Women and Children from Hexavalent Chromium Act of 2011.

The Boxer/Feinstein bill would require the Environmental Protection Agency to act within a year to set a safe limit for chromium-6 in drinking water. Your senators need to hear from you today that clean, safe drinking water is crucial.

Click here TODAY to tell your senators to co-sponsor the Protecting Pregnant Women and Children from Hexavalent Chromium Act of 2011, introduced by Senators Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein.

EWG supporters like you submitted tap water samples from their communities. This groundbreaking, people-powered report detected chromium-6 in 31 of the 35 city water supplies tested. Even though this report stirred controversy, our findings were confirmed by a number of water utilities’ own testing. Within hours of its release, EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson announced a new plan to help local utilities assess chromium-6 in drinking water nationwide. That’s a good first step. But EPA must go further.

Last week, I testified on our chromium-6 report before the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, chaired by Senator Boxer. And I am going to tell you what I told them: we were heartened by and support EPA’s announcement following the release of our report and by its decision to regulate perchlorate, but it is not enough. The Protecting Pregnant Women and Children from Hexavalent Chromium Act of 2011 will make sure there is a safe legal limit on chromium-6 in drinking water.

I have had the opportunity to testify in front of Congress many times, but this was the most gratifying. I was able to stand with the EPA and others concerned with ensuring that all Americans have access to safe, clean drinking water. This hearing — and this bill — are a direct result of EWG’s research. “Keep on doing what you’re doing,” Senator Boxer said to me in her concluding comments at the hearing.

We need to keep the momentum going. I’m counting on you to help us — and everyone else who drinks water.

Click here TODAY to tell your senators to co-sponsor the Protecting Pregnant Women and Children from Hexavalent Chromium Act of 2011.

Safe, clean drinking water is vital to EWG supporters like you. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by. Take action today.

Sincerely,

Ken Cook
President, EWG Action Fund

“Change your burned skin – change your life”

Gunning for success

Burn care and healing has been fraught with extreem pain and long crueling amounts of time to heal. Now the prayers have been answered with a gun. Until now burns have usually been treated with skin grafts, which involve taking skin sections from uninjured parts of the patient’s body, or growing sheets of skin artificially, and grafting them over the burn. The grafts can take several weeks or even months to heal, and during the recovery period patients are prone to infections because of the damage to the skin, which is the body’s first line of defense against pathogens.
Scientists have been able to regenerate skin in the laboratory for decades, but the process takes two to three weeks and the sheets of skin produced are fragile. When grafted on, blisters can form beneath it due to secretions, and can push up against the sheet and damage it. Scaring scars lives.

Enter the Skin-cell Gun

The skin sprayer works like a very high tech paint spray gun. Originally developed by Professor Joerg C. Gerlach and colleages of the Department of Surgery at the University of Pittsburg’s McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine.

Skin spraying have been in use  in Australia, where Dr Fiona Wood of the West Australia Burns Unit developed a method called “spray-on-skin.” Dr Wood’s method uses an aerosol system to spray on cultured skin cells.

This system also cuts healing time to days rather than weeks or months, and the technique substantially cut the death toll in the Bali bombings in 2002.

Dr Gerlach said the new method uses an electronically controlled pneumatic device that does not injure the cells, while the other skin spraying devices are hand-pumped atomizers.
In a process taking only an hour and a half in total, a biopsy is taken from the patient’s undamaged skin and then healthy stem cells are isolated from the biopsy and an aqueous solution containing the cells is sprayed on the burn.
The sprayed wound is then covered with a newly-developed dressing with tubes enmeshed within it and extending from each end. One set of tubes functions as an artery, while the second set functions as a vein. The tubes are connected to an “artificial vascular system” and provide electrolytes, antibiotics, amino acids and glucose to the wound. The dressing keeps the wound clean and sterile, and provides nutrition for the skin stem cells to encourage them to regenerate new skin.
After treatment the wound heals in just days, when it would have taken weeks to heal using traditional treatments. Dr Gerlach said patients had been treated at the Berlin Burn Center and they had regrown skin over a burned ear or an entire face in only a few days.

At the moment the technique can only be used on second-degree burns, but Dr Gerlach hopes it will later be able to tackle third-degree burns as well.
The research is funded by the US Department of Defense under the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine (AFIRM) consortium of research institutions, which was formed in 2008 to research better treatments for wounded service personnel.
The Skin-cell Gun was shown on the National Geographic channel in the episode Explorer: How to Build a Beating Heart, which looks at the latest tissue regeneration techniques.

“The crisis in modern dentistry”

The crisis in “modern” dentistry is many fold. High cost of the toxic materials that are used to fill and some way “save” dead or decaying teeth is staggering. These inflated costs, greed and economic depression have driven many to go to Mexico or worse yet sent the poor to illegal immigrant dentists like 71 year old Ukrainian native Vladimir Mandzyuk who ran his illegal clinic in the basement of a Sugar Hill, Georgia home.
The Crisis in Dentistry
The Office of the Surgeon General estimates that some 108 million children and adults  mostly the poor or lower middle class in the US have no dental coverage. One key determining factor in who can secure dental coverage is the source of their overall healthcare plan. 8 out of 10 people with employer provided health insurance had some sort of dental coverage while only 3 out 10 people who self-purchased health plans included dental coverage. The businesses would come out ahead if they would bank funds for their employees.
Most of these dental plans are not work purchasing. They are good if your family has strong healthy teeth and don’t need anything besides a cleaning twice a year, but it is cheaper to have a special saving account and monthly put $30 in it rather than  pay for the dental insurance.  You can let your money work for you.
Not surprisingly, the burden of this lack of dental coverage is heaped onto the poor. The Surgeon General reports that tooth decay remains the single most chronic disease for children, poor children suffer from twice as many cavities as the children of the affluent and 51 million school hours are lost each year to dental-related illnesses. A shocking 50 percent of poor children have not even been seen by a dentist before entering Kindergarten.
Next topic: There is the issue of natural quality care and the over pricing issue. In the past three years my eyes have been open to the shoddy overpriced care

“Tooth decay, fluoride and dental abuse”

In the United States alone, consumers spend more than $50 billion each year on the treatment of cavities. It is common knowledge that sugar residues on teeth can help cause tooth decay. The “solution” A partial solution in the past  we were told was to drink fluoridated water and by all means use fluoride laced toothpaste. We trusted these “medical professionals” to treat us in the safest least toxic way and at a reasonable cost.

First, let us discuss fluoridation

Fluoride is actually a hazardous waste taken from the scrubbers in smoke stacks of industry and phosphate fertilizer companies. “Fluoride” is too toxic for ocean or river dumping, but mysteriously acceptable for placing in our water for drinking or bathing.

In order to cause dental fluorosis the fluoride must be ingested (swallowed) during that time period when the child’s tooth enamel is forming. The most critical years associated with the formation of dental fluorosis lie between birth and age 6 or 7. Because the fluorosis staining occurs while the teeth are developing, evidence of this stain cannot be visualized until the affected teeth have erupted, which is typically between the years 6 through 12. (See above image)

The vast majority of dental fluorosis that occurs in the United States is a mild form characterized by the appearance of chalky-white lines or opaque-white patches in a tooth’s enamel. More severe forms of fluorosis can occur however. In extreme forms the affected areas have a yellow or brown discoloration. In some cases severe forms of fluorosis will result in a pitted tooth surface.

For the past nine years, the Fluoride Action Network — along with the Environmental Working Group and Beyond Pesticides — have persisted in challenging EPA’s decision to allow DOW AgroSciences to fumigate hundreds of food commodities in the United States with sulfuryl fluoride.

On Monday, January 11, 2011, EPA announced that they have granted all our Objections to the use of sulfuryl fluoride on the grounds that children are being overexposed to fluoride. EPA therefore is withdrawing ALL previously allowed tolerances for sulfuryl fluoride on ALL foodstuffs.

This is the first time in EPA’s history that they have granted an Objection to a pesticide.

Opponents to fluoridation claim that putting a toxic chemical like fluoride in the water or on foods just to make a small difference can be affecting so many body systems adversely at the same time is not ethical and is not safe.

Even the American Dental Association issued a warning in November 2006, urging parents not to prepare infant formula with water containing fluoride. Are dentists announcing the major shift in position from the ADA regarding “fluoride”?

Every tube of toothpaste with fluoride carries a warning: “Keep away from children. If too much is swallowed accidentally, contact your physician or report to a Poison Control Center.”

Talk to your dentist.

Caution:  Toothpaste should always be spit out and never swallowed. In all cases fluoridated toothpaste should be kept out of the reach of children and only dispensed to them by an adult.

Tomorrow let’s discuss quality of dental care or the lack of it.  Please submit experience and comments.

“Are your batteries safe”- health tip

Battery Safety for hand held devices and cars

WARNING: Leakage of battery fluid can cause an explosion and personal injury. If battery leakage occurs, thoroughly wash the affected skin and clothes.
Keep batteries away from children.Keep battery fluid away from your eyes and mouth.
Leaking batteries may make popping sounds that leakage if from a car or truck can cause an explosion and significant bodily harm. Check out these real life accounts.
The Lead Acid battery is made up of plates, lead, and lead oxide (various other elements are used to change density, hardness, porosity, etc.) with a 35% sulfuric acid and 65% water solution.

This solution is called electrolyte, which causes a chemical reaction that produce electrons. When you test a battery with a hydrometer, you are measuring the amount of sulfuric acid in the electrolyte. If your reading is low, that means the chemistry that makes electrons is lacking. So where did the sulfur go? It is resting on the battery plates and when you recharge the battery, the sulfur returns to the electrolyte.

To avoid battery leakage:
Do not mix used and new batteries (replace all batteries at the same time).
Do not mix different brands of batteries.
Nintendo recommends alkaline batteries. Do not use Lithium ion, nickel cadmium (nicad), or carbon zinc batteries.
Do not leave batteries in the remote or other devices for long periods of non-use.
Do not recharge alkaline or non-rechargeable batteries.
Do not put the batteries in backwards. Make sure that the positive (+) and negative (-) ends are facing in the correct directions. Insert the negative end first. When removing batteries, remove the positive end first.
Do not use damaged, deformed or leaking batteries.
Do not dispose of batteries in a fire.
Recycle batteries safely.

For more technical information on the types of batteries check out.

“Acai berry scam promoted in main media”

The acai berry products hsve been promoted for quick weight loss. It has become the latest and greatest craze, but with the craze come the crazies – the scam artists who pray on peoples needs for their own monetary gains.

Be aware of the scam promotions in the newspapers and on the web. Their ads may often begin with some of the following lines:

Look out for other manufacturing processes

Avoid products with additional ingredients

Avoid products that only include the Acai berry fruit as a minor ingredient

Free trial offers

Avoid products with any listed side effects

Over the last several months, the LA Times website and other mainstream media outlets have been running ads featuring text with messages like, “1 Trick of a Tiny Belly: Cut down a bit of your belly every day using this 1 weird old tip.”

The ad lures web surfers into a deceptive “fake news page” designed to trick people into agreeing to misleading offers that may result in hundreds of dollars being charged to their credit cards.

The “tiny belly” ads (http://www.naturalnews.com/images/T…), take surfers to any one of multiple fake news sites that appear to be legitimate news sites but are actually deceptive marketing pages. One such fake news page dubbed “Health News” features apparent news video footage from “Fox35,” an AccuWeather report, an apparent testimonial and a collection of user comments which appear to be completely fabricated. The “Leave reply” section is “closed due to spam,” says the fabricated advertorial page.
