“The biggest win for these lottery winners”

As the Beatles song goes “Money can’t buy me love”.  Canadian lottery winners Allen and Violet Large have decided that these large winnings are a headache. Their hearts are Larger than their winnings.

it brought them anxiety over the prospect that “crooked people” might take advantage of them. Several people called them out of the blue to ask for money when the news first broke that they’d won the jackpot. So they began an $11 million donation spree to get rid of it and help others, the Chronicle Herald reports:

They took care of family first and then began delivering donations to the two pages’ worth of groups they had decided on, including the local fire department, churches, cemeteries, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, hospitals in Truro and Halifax, where Violet underwent her cancer treatment, and organizations that fight cancer, Alzheimer’s and diabetes. Those are just a few groups that have benefited by their good fortune and good will.

Great examples of how just one or two people can potentially make life long improvements in their community and the lives of so many.
They kept  only 2 percent of the money for a rainy day.

Why?

“It made us feel good,” said Violet “and so much good being done with that money.””That money that we won was nothing,” her tearful husband, Allen, told Patricia Brooks Arenburg of the Nova Scotia Chronicle Herald. “We have each other.”

They have not spent one cent on ourselves because they have been too busy getting everything looked. Their other main focus is Violet’s heath.

As Violet says, “We live in the country and we’re proud of it. Money can’t buy you health or happiness.”

“Baby falls into dr. arms”

If ever the winds of fate, the blessing of the heavens, good luck -call it what you like, but this is one very blessed child.

A French good Samaritan saved a Parisian toddler from certain death this week. The toddler fell from a seventh story apartment window into the arms of a stranger below. This stranger is a medical doctor and was alerted to the fall by his son.

Thanks and praise goes out to the doctor and his son for saving the child’s life. The little girl was playing unattended with her siblings when she fell out the window.

After a checkup at the local northern Paris city hospital, she was released. Amazingly, she did not even get a scratch!

“Stop colds this season?”

The Human rhinovirus is the common cold. It enters through the nose and attaches itself to the surface cells (epithelial cells) in the nose or upper respiratory tract, then copies it self rapidly like a fax machine gone crazy. If the cells of the respiratory system becomes weakened through  emotional stress, too little water, accidents, poor food choices, lack of sleep, too little exercise .. the environment for your cells is challenged and often the body’s pH will become acidic. This allows the Rhino Virus to breed and spread inside your respiratory system.

How does it copy itself so fast?

The Human rhinoviruses enters the upper respiratory tract. and the virus inserts itself into another molecule called a receptor protein on the surface of a cell that is lining  the nose, throat or bronchi. The virus functions like a  key in the lock of a door. Once the virus locks itself to the receptor protein, it unlocks the cell and duplicates itself. The copy breaks away  to find another weakened cell to infect.

The infected cells do not enjoy being invaded, so they send out chemical distress signals called that activates the healing response in the form of immune cells that will come to the rescue of the inflamed cells and try to quell the inflammation.
Infection occurs rapidly, within 15 minutes of entering the respiratory tract. Over 50 per cent of individuals will experience symptoms within 2 days of infection. Only about 5 per cent of individuals have a cold after infection in less than 20 hours. Five percent of the people will take longer than four and a half days to exhibit the Rhino virus symptoms. It grow well at 32°C the temperature which is the normal temperature in the upper respiratory tract.

Symptoms of a cold may include a sore throat, runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing and cough; sometimes accompanied by muscle aches, fatigue, malaise, headache, muscle weakness, or loss of appetite. Fever and extreme exhaustion are more usual in influenza. Children may have six to twelve colds a year. In the United States, the incidence of colds is higher in the autumn and winter, with most infections occurring between September to April. The seasonality may be due to the start of the school year, or due to people spending more time indoors (thus in closer proximity with each other),
Preventing the cold before it happens:

  • eating plenty of fruit.
  • exercising five or more days of the week cut the length and intensity of a cold from about five days in three-month period. Those that did little or no exercise colds lasted nine days in three months.
  • Feeling fit and being active cut the risk of having a cold by nearly 50%.
  • keep well hydrated
  • eat lots of fresh multicolored vegetable
  • get lots of sleep
  • do stress buster activities like deep breathing, meditation, dance
  • wash hands frequently

“Alcohol more dangerous to the family than illegal drugs”

Alcohol is more dangerous than illegal drugs like heroin and crack cocaine, according to a new British study. British experts evaluated substance abuse effects of alcohol, cocaine, heroin, ecstasy and marijuana, ranking them based on how destructive they are to the individual who takes them and to society as a whole.
In the studied drugs, heroin, crack cocaine and methamphetamine, or crystal meth, were found to be the most lethal to individuals. When considering their wider social effects, effects of substance abuse, alcohol, heroin and crack cocaine were the deadliest. Marijuana, ecstasy and LSD scored far lower. Overall, alcohol outranked all other substances, followed by heroin and crack cocaine. The study was paid for by Britain’s Center for Crime and Justice Studies and was published online Monday in the medical journal, Lancet.

Some examples of how alcohol or the tendency to drink is destroying lives in the US.

  • Fifth and sixth-grade students found that those who demonstrated an awareness of beer ads also held more favorable beliefs about drinking and intended to drink more frequently when they grew up.
  • Children who are drinking alcohol by 7th grade are more likely to report academic problems, substance use, and delinquent behavior in both middle school and high school.
  • Classical alcoholism takes about 15 years to develop, but it can happen much quicker in adolescents and young adults.
  • Teen alcohol use kills about 6000 people each year, more than all illegal drugs combined.
  • One in five teens binge drink. Only 1 in 100 parents believes his or her teen binge drinks.
In the US current regular drinkers (at least 12 drinks in the past year): 52%
  • Kids who start drinking young are seven times more likely to be in an alcohol-related crash. One in three 8th graders drinks alcohol.
  • Drunk driving costs each adult in this country almost $500 per year.Number of alcoholic liver disease deaths: 14,406
  • Number of alcohol-induced deaths, excluding accidents and homicides: 23,199
  • By the time they are high school seniors, 80% have used alcohol and 62% have been drunk.
  • Every minute, one person is injured from an alcohol-related crash.
  • In the United States, roughly 50,000 cases of alcohol poisoning are reported each year, and approximately once every week, someone dies from this preventable condition.
  • Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) serves a victim or survivor of drunk driving every 10 minutes. Since 1980 MADD has nearly saved 300,000 lives

Treatment for alcoholism has been shown to reduce criminal activity up to 80% among chronic offenders, has increased their rate of employment, decreases homelessness and reduces all health care costs.

“Behind influencing others lurks a monster”

The back side to influencing others –

Does power or positions of influence over others

like doctors, lawyers, minsters, government … corrupt?

Behavior of the powerful can and often does poison even the most intelligent and well-meaning people when their influential positions go to their head and let ego run the show.

Beware of  the following symptoms of developing ego corruption:

  • focusing more on your own needs and wants and less on the needs and reactions of others;
  • having less empathy for others, acting like the rules don’t apply to you and simply using others for your own selfish ends;
  • exhibiting less impulse control – too much sex, food, drugs, wild life and erratic emotional highs and lows.
  • They do inane things that damage themselves, their families, their business or organization and their country.

The good news is we do have fine examples to follow Dr. Deepak Chopra, Mahatma Gandhi and the Dalai Lama who stay grounded and growing in health, warmth, compassion and spirituality even at the height of their power.

“Rx for success”

If they walk like a duck
If they quack like a duck
They must be ducks.
Once again hasty generalization is not valid.

What turns a dummy pill into a catalyst for relieving pain, anxiety, depression, sexual dysfunction, or the tremors of Parkinson’s disease? The brain’s own healing mechanisms, unleashed by the belief that a phony medication is the real thing. The most important ingredient in any placebo is the doctor’s bedside manner, but according to research, the color of a tablet can boost the effectiveness even of genuine meds—or help convince a patient that a placebo is a potent remedy.—Steve Silberman

Researchers at the University of California published in the October issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.a review of a 167 placebo-controlled trials published in peer-reviewed medical journals in 2008 and 2009 and found that 92 percent of those trials never even described the ingredients of their placebo pills.

There are no regulations govern placebo composition. The composition of placebos can in randomized, placebo-controlled trials. Reviewers independently abstracted data from the introduction and methods sections of identified articles, recording treatment type (pill, injection, or other) and whether placebo composition was stated. They found that most studies disclosure was less common for pills than for injections and other treatments (8.2% vs. 26.7%; P = 0.002). Placebos were seldom described in randomized, controlled trials of pills or capsules. Because the nature of the placebo can influence trial outcomes, placebo formulation should be disclosed in reports of placebo-controlled trials.
Why is this important. The fact that “modern medical research” claims that their system of drugs is better and safer for patients then homeopathy, herbs, or acupuncture, because they have run double and triple blind studies using placebos to measure the effectiveness of the trial medicine.
What they have not done is standardize what is in the placebos. Why? It was considered unimportant and the less attention given to individuals getting better on something other than the test drug was baffling and down right bad for Big Pharm business.

A placebo may contain sugar or olive oil or salt or some liquid for all the patients know, but they may outperform the trial drug. Why? The placebo or healing response works best when the patient or tester spends quality time with a health professional before the trial begins.

Yes, consistently placebo + human caring + hope +belief = better results with or without the trial drug even over extended periods of time.

So healing of the body begins in the mind of the patient and is accelerated when the practitioner explains and shares his support and expertise with the patient.  People caring for people is the key to success in life, love and healing.

This is very important for another reason too-the patients put their hopes and faith in the test that they will be helped. The mindset of the person can be giving better results than the test drug. The placebo could also potentially harm the individual as well.

“Be proactive to lessen SAD symptoms and the winter blues”

Seasonal Effective Disorder and the winter blues may both be strongly aggrevated byinsufficient light which can disrupt the body’s hormonal balance. It seems that the light/dark and sleep cycles are orchestrated by the pineal gland.that controls the flow of light energy traveling through the nerve pathways from the eyes to various parts of the brain.  The light must be brighter than ordinary room light to activate the pineal gland.

When the pineal gland senses darkness of night secretes a hormone called melatonin, which has sedative properties.

These symptoms of SAD or the winter moody blues can be lessened by

  • increasing exposure to light, either by being outdoors more in the winter or using full-spectrum lighting in the home that contain the full spectrum from ultraviolet to infrared, violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, red, and others.
  • Limit the amount of time you wearing sunglasses because sunglasses limit the light traveling from the eyes to the pineal gland. Caution: Take precautionary measures when sunlight is strong.
  • Deficiency in any nutrient can cause an imbalance to the body which may result in a worsening of the winter blues or SAD.
  • try to eat a well-balanced diet to help your body cope with seasonal changes.  Be sure to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, including many raw fruits and vegetables.
  • Eat more raw foods and drink green/fruit drinks. Have a large and varied salad at each meal; raw fruits, nuts, and seeds (unsalted preferred)

These foods and condiments are high in magnesium  *  iron * selenium which help decrease SAD or winter blues symptoms.

Flours: Whole wheat, Nuts: dried, unblanched brazil nuts, almonds, cashew

Legumes: beans, tofu,

Herbs: dried Chinese parsley, caraway, cilantro, dried marjoram, dried/freezed dried parsley, freeze dried chives, oregano, tarragon, thyme, saffron, dried marjoram,

Seeds: flaxseed, pumpkin and squash seeds, dried pepitas, celery seed, dill seed,   cumin seed, fortified peanut butter, sesame butter paste

Seaweeds, agar

Meats chicken, turkey fish, game meat, tofu, green spagetti, turnips, lamb, wheat flour,

Spices: basil, dried, thyme, dried, crude rice bran, coriander leaf, sage, ground

Crude Wheat bran

Babyfood, cereal, oatmeal, with honey, dry

“Medical tourism -the trip hard to enjoy”

With an ever growing number of patients from around the world expected to visit India for healthcare that would be very costly in their home country.  Besides low cost, other factors have been identified in our report that are boosting medical tourism in India. The future of India’s medical tourism industry seems extremely bright.  It is expected that the medical tourism market will grow at by 31% during 2010-2013.
Pharmaceutical outsourcing, health insurance, and medical tourism are anticipated to be the three fastest growing segments in the Indian healthcare market, with all the segments growing at double-digit growth rate during 2010-2013.

Why are people needing to seek more and more care other than in their homeland?

Personal lifestyle stresses causing chronic stress, poor  lifestyle and food choices that are causing a dramatic jump in chronic diseases will create a huge demand in various emerging segments of the industry.

“How to curb the decline in endangered sealife”

Knowing how fish are raised and caught is the first step in sustainable buying.

Look for these key descriptive terms on the label:
Trolling: Baited fishing lines pulled behind a boat; little or no bycatch of unwanted fish.
Pole-caught: Single fishing line attached to a pole; little or no bycatch.

Purse seining: Large wall of netting encircles schools of fish, such as sardines, or species that gather to spawn, such as squid; some types unintentionally catch other animals.
Longlining: Central fishing line, sometimes more than 50 miles long, holds smaller, baited lines; primarily used to catch tuna, halibut and swordfish, but it also hooks sea turtles, sharks and seabirds attracted to the bait.

Trawling: Large nets dragged through the ocean, either midway down or along the floor; nonselective and bottom trawling seriously damages seabeds.
Green money talks louder than retoric. If you want to eat healthier foods, then let your purse do the talking.

If you do not buy junk, pesticided food or toxic or endangered species meat, GMO plants, animals, or toxic seafood then the pressure to harvest so much meat from the sea or land will not be there.
Look for ecolabels before you buy

Ecolabels or green stickers are labelling systems for food and consumer products. They are a form of sustainability measurement directed at consumers, intended to make it easy to take environmental concerns into account when shopping. Some labels quantify pollution or energy consumption by way of index scores or units of measurement; others simply assert compliance with a set of practices or minimum requirements for sustainability or reduction of harm to the environment.

Ecolabelling is often voluntary, but green stickers are mandated by law in North America for major appliances and automobiles, but not our food products or me

Can you trust ecolabelling?  The pressure for green-sustainable products and food is growing as consumer demands rises.  many large corporations and former quality natural food companies have felt the need to “rubber stamp” labels or greenwash their products because it will bring them more $$$.
Food ecolabels does not mean the same as organic labelling. Many certification standards with ecolabels exist, such as Rainforest Alliance, Utz coffee, cocoa and tea, GreenPalm, Marine Stewardship Council, and many more; these are aimed at sustainable food production and good social and environmental performance, but are not organic.

Two of the largest ecolabeling groups for seafood are the Marine Stewardship Council which uses an ecolabel MSC for certified sustainable seafood and the Friend of the Sea which focuses on certifying sustainable fisheries.

Friend of the Sea
The Friend of the Sea is an NGO founded in December 2006 to conserve marine habitat and resources by means of market incentives and specific conservation projects. It is the only scheme which certifies as sustainable, with the same seal of approval, both farmed and wild-caught products. Certified products from all continents include anchovies, caviar, clams, cuttlefish, halibut, kingfish, mackerel, mulloway, mussels, prawns, salmon, seabass, seabream, shrimps, squid, sturgeon, trout, tuna, turbot. Fishmeal, fishfeed and Omega-3 Fish oil have also been certified. Sustainable seafood, products and their origins are audited onsite by international certification bodies, against Friend of the Sea criteria. Certification bodies currently auditing against Friend of the Sea criteria are Aqa, Bureau Veritas, IFQC and SGS .
The Friend of the Sea criteria is currently the only one which follows the FAO – Guidelines for the Ecolabelling of Fish and Fishery Products from Marine Capture Fisheries, by fulfilling Article 30 of the Guidelines which allows certification only of products from fisheries targeting stocks which are not overexploited.

The Marine Stewardship Council’s distinctive blue ecolabel enables consumers to identify seafood that has come from a sustainable source. The MSC program is voluntary and fisheries that are independently assessed and meet the MSC’s environmental standard can use the MSC blue ecolabel. As of April 2010 it can be found on the packaging of seafood and fresh fish counters on nearly 4,000 products in over 60 countries around the world.

The MSC standard is consistent with the ‘Guidelines for the Eco-labelling of Fish and Fishery Products from Marine Wild Capture Fisheries’ adopted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in 2005. Any fishery that wishes to become MSC certified and use the ecolabel is assessed against the MSC standard by a third party, independent certification body that has been independently accredited to perform MSC assessments by Accreditation Services International (ASI). Chain of custody certification along the supply chain from boat to point of sale ensures that seafood sold bearing the ecolabel originated from an MSC certified fishery. The Council was founded as a result of the work of the Seafood Choices Alliance.

Eat sustainably raised or caught non-endangered fish. Here is a guide to sustainable fish and sushi.
