“Green with greed turns companies to make false claims”

Being green it not just the mantra for Kermit the Frog, but companies have realized the $$ to be had at been green even if you are not.

Companies that for many years had peoples’ respect now have recently come under crutiny for claims of being all natural or organic, but do not walk the walk.
Namely Burt’s Bees has been found to be less than chemical free. Their sunscreen product that contains, among other things, titanium dioxide is a chemical.

Seventh Generation is not seventh heaven for green either they are not chemical free as they claim.

In Britain Sainsbury’s, the second biggest supermarket chain, has been taken to task by the Advertising Standards Authority over its claims for organic food, just a month after the biggest supermarket, Tesco, was similarly criticised.

Green chemistry and engineering efforts are working to identify the safest chemicals and their processes (and develop new ones) so manufacturers have an increasing set of the safest ingredients to use for their products.
So time to walk your talk.

“No Cow’s milk for infants and young kids”

Cow’s milk is not recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics for children under 1 year old.

Infants fed whole milk from cows get insufficient amts of

  • vitamin E
  • iron
  • essential fatty acids.

Infants fed whole milk from cows get too much

  • too much protein
  • sodium,
  • potassium.

These levels may be too high for the infant’s system to handle. Also, whole cow’s milk protein and fat are more difficult for an infant to digest and absorb.

For the best infant nutrition, pick the right milk source the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants be fed breast milk or iron-fortified formula during the first 12 months of life. Between ages 4 – 6 months, certain solid foods may be added (not fruits).

Breast milk or iron-fortified formula, along with age-appropriate solid foods and avoid  juices during the first year of life, provides more balanced nutrition.

Iron-fortified infant formula or breast milk should be used until a child is 1 year old. No  Dairy Intake for Babies and Toddlers.

“Help children get the nutrition they need”

  • Tell U.S. Congress

The Child Nutrition Act can only be reauthorized once every five years.

This is a re-authorization year — and with 1 in 4 children struggling with hunger and 1 in 3 children obese or overweight,

the Child Nutrition Re-authorization could not come at a more critical time.

At least 128 national organizations concerned with the health and welfare of children are joining together to call on Congress to pass a strong child nutrition bill (S. 3307/H.R. 5504). This legislation would strengthen programs like school meals, WIC (supplemental nutrition program for women, infants and children), and summer and after-school feeding programs.

If a Child Nutrition Bill is not passed millions of children will miss out on improved access to the nutritious food they need to learn and grow.

Tell Congress that America’s children can’t wait — pass stronger nutrition legislation now.

“Most memorable lacrosse game of their lives”

As reported by sports columnist George Diaz at OrlandoSentinel.com, the Winter Springs girls lacrosse team played a special scrimmage at halftime of the Winter Springs junior varsity football game on Wednesday night. The Bears varsity squad challenged their JV counterparts in an off season special half time exibition.

What was the special occasion for this scrimmage months out of season on short notice? There was one special spectator at the game, Carl Defoe, a middle-aged man devoid of body hair after five rounds of chemotherapy, cheering on his daughter for the first — and in all likelihood, the last — time in his life.

Defoe is dying of lung cancer, and he knows that he doesn’t have much time left — six weeks, eight weeks, maybe more. The  cancer has spread from his one remaining lung to his brain stem and spinal cord. While Defoe insists that he isn’t done fighting the disease yet, the one thing that left him most anguished was knowing he’d never get to see his daughter, Heather, play in a high school lacrosse game.

Somehow the Winter Springs High School administration heard about Defoe’s last wish. The school quickly sprung into action, contacting the notoriously rigid Florida High School Activities Association to ask for special approval to hold a one-time, out-of-season lacrosse scrimmage. Amazingly, the FHSAA approved the request almost instantly, with one condition: They wanted a photo from the game.

So, on Wednesday, at halftime of the Winter Springs junior varsity football game against Oviedo High School, the two girls lacrosse squads faced off in a brisk, seven-minute scrimmage. Heather Defoe played for the varsity squad instead of the junior varsity team she’s scheduled to play with this spring … and she scored three goals.

Then, when it was all over, the two teams gathered around a happy man in a wheelchair, posed for cameras and the whole special event was gone, over as quickly as it had come.

Gone, but not forgotten by anyone there, not least of all Carl himself. If there were ever questions of whether sports can change a person’s outlook on life, they should be quieted by what Carl Defoe told Diaz just after the scrimmage wrapped up.

“I feel lucky,” Defoe said.

“Children increasing risk of EMR on brain and body health”

Children are at the greatest risk from the thermal effects of electromagnetic radiation

as emitted from cell phone towers, cell phones and all objects that have current flowing through them.

Why?

They have thinner skulls, and their brains and bodies are growing rapidly. Doctors from the United Kingdom have issued warnings urging children under 16 not to use cell phones, to reduce their exposure to radio frequency (RF) radiation.

Singapore in 2001, there was huge coverage in all the newspapers because 20-year-olds throughout the city were having heart attacks and they couldn’t figure out why. Then, someone figured out it was because it was the fashion at that time for young people to wear their cell phones on decorative cords around their necks. This meant that their cell phones were hanging right next to – you guessed it – their heart. So a warning went out in all the local newspapers, telling kids not to wear their cell phones on these cords. But funnily enough, no one I’ve spoken to in Canada (or the U.S.) ever heard about that. And no one thought about warning people not to wear their cell phones clipped to their belt, or in their pocket.

EM radiation carries energy and momentum that may be imparted to matter with which it interacts. The basic structure of matter involves charged particles bound together in many different ways. When electromagnetic radiation is incident on matter, it causes the charged particles to oscillate and gain energy. The ultimate fate of this energy depends on the situation. It could be immediately re-radiated and appear as scattered, reflected, or transmitted radiation. It may also get dissipated into other microscopic motions within the matter, coming to thermal equilibrium and manifesting itself as thermal energy in the material.

Cell phone companies are paying churches and schools monthly fees to allow cell phone towers to be built near the building, either in the open like what is going in across the street from my home and the neighborhood school or the companies may disguise the tower under a fake rock, in an artificial palm tree or saguaro cactus.

Why are schools and churches allowing this potential health hazard, because funds are tight and they need the money.

“Link trans fats and inflammatory diseases”

The escalation of chronic inflammatory diseases like heart, diabetes, weight gain, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel, many digestive and countless immune conditions like allergy, colds and flu is parallel to the growth in popularity of trans fats in the modern American diet.

Prior to 1910, dietary fats consisted primarily of butterfat, beef tallow, and lard.  In the early 1900s,  soybean oil came into use as a by product of the soybean industry. At the same time, there was not enough butterfat available for consumers. The method of hydrogenating fat and turning a liquid fat into a solid one had been discovered, and now the ingredients (soybeans) and the “need” (shortage of butter) were there. The fat industry found that hydrogenated fats was born.
Hydrogenated fat such as Crisco and Spry, sold in England, began to replace lard in the baking of bread, pies, cookies, and cakes in 1920. Production of hydrogenated fats (trans fats or saturated fats)  increased steadily until the 1960s, as processed vegetable fats replaced animal fats in the US and other western countries.

In 1988s research began to sound the alarm that trans fats could be a cause of the large increase in coronary artery disease and other inflammatory diseases. In 1994, it was estimated that trans fats caused 20,000 deaths annually in the US from heart disease. Women are more effected by saturated fats than men, but no one is immune. Leading a life sitting 6 hours plus a day will dramatically raise your chances of thickening  your belly and your arteries.

By January 2007, consumer and medical pressure and the USFDA forced Crisco to reformulate their product. of an outright ban on the sale of their product, Crisco was reformulated to meet the United States Food and Drug Administration definition of “zero grams trans fats per
Today chronic, low-grade inflammation almost always lurks beneath the surface of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart inflammation, excess weight, and many immune disorders. Low-grade inflammation has also been linked to an increased risk of cancer and Alzheimer?s disease. If you have any of the above conditions or unexplained weight gain or big emotional swings, your doctor/health practitioner can measure it with the high-sensitivity C-reactive protein or CRP test to find out if this inflammatory factor is very high. Changing what you eat and increase your exercise level can help.

“Life line to Southern Az schools -Tools for Schools”

World Care and our efforts in providing humanitarian assistance to the local community and abroad. Here are a few World Care updates.

Tools for Schools 2010 -People Helping People

World Care, Tucson, Arizona has  provided disadvantaged Southern Arizona students and financially strapped teachers with the supplies necessary to begin a successful school year.
World Care Teacher Days allowed teachers from multiple districts to request school supplies for their classrooms and pick them up at our headquarters.  138 teachers received school packs, alleviating the need for them to purchase supplies with their own money, which has become a common problem in education during this financial crisis.

School administrators also utilized Tools for Schools to gain materials for all of their teachers and students.  1,939 pounds of supplies were picked up by principals to be given to teachers and students at their schools.  In addition to the supplies donated to teachers, World Care also assembled student school packs.  The supplies were organized at our headquartersand 199 pounds were distributed to students grades K-12.

In July and August, World Care also donated 67 refurbished computers to schools and low income students.
