"Sunscreen guide from EWG -protecting you and your family"

More than a million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the U.S. every year. The incidence of malignant melanoma, the most dangerous form of the disease, is escalating. Effective sunscreens are crucial to public health. But EWG’s investigation reveals that they may be hard to find: * 59 sunscreens with SPFs from 55-100+ might tempt you to stay out longer in the sun, but they block just 1-2% more sunburn rays than an SPF 30 sunscreen. * Hundreds of all-day moisturizers advertise SPF protection, but 1 in 5 offers little protection from harmful UVA rays. Some break down well before the day’s end. A surprising new government report attributes an increasing incidence of malignant melanoma among people who work indoors to UVA rays shining through windows onto unprotected skin. * Lip cancer is most common on the bottom lip where sun exposure is most direct. Two of 5 lip balms offer poor UVA protection. One plus for 2009: 19% fewer sunscreens contain oxybenzone, a hormone disruptor approved by FDA as an active ingredient in sunscreen.

Few sunscreens live up to their advertising claims, and the federal government is powerless to make them. The federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been promising to regulate sunscreens since 1978, when gasoline was 63 cents a gallon and the BeeGees’ “Saturday Night Fever” topped the charts.

Thirty plus years has gone by without action. Tired of delays and excuses?

Take action: ask FDA to do its job and issue some sunscreen regulations with teeth. email FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg.

In the meantime, EWG’s research team has created this comprehensive guide listing 82 recommended products and other sun safety tips to help you and your family have fun in the sun safely.

Check out your favorites and see how they rate. You will probably be as surprised as I was. Thanks so much for this detailed evaluation.

"Wonderous flowered carpet display in Brussels"

In The Market Square in Brussels late summer hosts the creation of the magnificent design of its flower carpet has drawn inspiration from 18th century French patterns. Locals and tourists alike find this magnificent work of art breath taking. Local TV and the city host special music and light shows to accompany the carpets display for three days and four night.

begonia flower carpet
begonia flower carpet

The world’s largest Savonnerie carpet

The name of this famous French workshop comes from the establishment where it was founded in 1627 by Louis XIII, on the current location of the Palais in Paris. At that time, continuous wars had led the kings of France to relocate the prestigious craft on their territory. Henri IV had even simply prohibited the import of foreign tapestries as of 1601.

This 2008 carpet was inspiration from Persian, Caucasian or Turkish patterns. The designs of French carpets adopted a style of floral and plant patterns, mixed with royal and, inevitably, Christian symbols. The fleur-de-lys, for example, depicts the Holy Trinity with its three petals. It had been adopted by the kings of France since the Middle Ages, and exalted by the Bourbon dynasty all the way to Spain. The particular, eight-pointed cross of the Templars refers to the cosmic balance, the resurrection and the New Testament. The Savonnerie craftsmen that created the original patterns excelled in the precise and delicate way they practiced their craft.

Arranged by craftsmen on the cobblestones without any soil, nearly one million fresh begonias are used is created this living 300 square meter ( 3229.17 sq. feet) carpet every other year in the Market Place in front of the Grand Place in Brussels. The next creation will be hosted in August of 2010.

No camera image or video can reproduce the splendor of this work of art. Thank you for making our world more beautiful for supporting and creating the annual beautiful work of art.

"Making a difference one person at a time Jackson's "We are the World"

In memory of the good times, a song to unite the world.

The inspired and upbeat “We Are the World” is a 1985 song written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, produced and conducted by Quincy Jones and recorded by a super group of 45 popular musicians to raise money for Africa which had experienced unusual drought in 1984/1985. Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie wrote the song for charity, knowing there were people dying of starvation in Africa. Quincy Jones agreed to produce and sent a demo to all the participating artists, along with a note to “check their egos at the door”. Vocal format Jones worked out which singers would perform which lyrics, studying recordings of each of the selected singers to decide which would work well with each other. He paired Billy Joel with Tina Turner and Willie Nelson with Dionne Warwick, as well as Michael Jackson with Prince (who was a no-show for the recording), so instead with Diana Ross. During the performance, the solo portions, sung by the lead singers, allowed their distinctive, famous voices to be heard individually, or in pairs, for a short phrase, before the entire group sang the third repetition of the chorus verses. Fifty singers were turned down from lending their voices to the group effort. When the song was released worldwide to aid the poor in Africa and the US. The single became one of the best-selling singles of all time, with nearly 20 million copies sold and millions of dollars donated to famine relief.

We can make a difference one person at a time.

The “Invisible Children: rough cut” film exposes the effects of a 20 year-long war on the children of Northern Uganda. These children live in fear of abduction by rebel soldiers, and are being forced to fight as a part of violent army. It is sad, but hopeful.

From the American Academy Of Environmental Medicine

Immediate Moratorium On Genetically Modified Foods May 19, 2009

The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) today released its position paper on Genetically Modified foods stating that “GM foods pose a serious health risk” and calling for a moratorium on GM foods. Citing several animal studies, the AAEM concludes “there is more than a casual association between GM foods and adverse health effects” and that “GM foods pose a serious health risk in the areas of toxicology, allergy and immune function, reproductive health, and metabolic, physiologic and genetic health.”

– Dr. Amy L. Dean, D.O. Public Relations Chair Member, Board of Directors American Academy of Environmental Medicine 734-213-4901 environmentalmed@yahoo.com

The AAEM calls for:

* A moratorium on GM food, implementation of immediate long term safety testing and labeling of GM food.
* Physicians to educate their patients, the medical community and the public to avoid GM foods.
* Physicians to consider the role of GM foods in their patients’ disease processes.
* More independent long term scientific studies to begin gathering data to investigate the role of GM foods on human health.

“Physicians are probably seeing the effects in their patients, but need to know how to ask the right questions,” said Dr. Jennifer Armstrong, President of AAEM. “The most common foods in North America which are consumed that are GMO are corn, soy, canola, and cottonseed oil.”

The AAEM’s position paper on Genetically Modified foods can be found at http:aaemonline.org/gmopost.html.

AAEM is an international association of physicians and other professionals dedicated to addressing the clinical aspects of environmental health. AAEM The American Academy of Environmental Medicine was founded in 1965, and is an international association of physicians and other professionals interested in the clinical aspects of humans and their environment. The Academy is interested in expanding the knowledge of interactions between human individuals and their environment, as these may be demonstrated to be reflected in their total health. The AAEM provides research and education in the recognition, treatment and prevention of illnesses induced by exposures to biological and chemical agents encountered in air, food and water.

"Beth the ultimate birthday card sender"

People helping People

The ultimate birthday greeting card maker

Beth Catlin loves to make and send birthday cards to people. She sends them to neighbors, friends, acquaintances and many people she has never met. She has created these special greetings for people for 40 years. Even if she has only met you once and you never are in contact with you again she will remember your birthday for as long as she lives and send you a card.
This special gift comes from the fact that she is a savant and her special gift to the planet is her ability to remember names, addresses and birthdates. She makes and mails about 3,800 birthday cards a year to people she has me

The 50-year-old is a savant, who while being diagnosed as mentally challenged also has the amazing ability to recall numbers, dates and, of course, birthdays with computer-like precision.

When Catlin was first profiled by the Patriot-News in 1995, she was averaging about 1,400 cards a year. This year, she surpassed 3,800 with each date, name and address cataloged in her brain for life.
Most of the funding to continue her work comes through Elizabeth’s job at the S. Wilson Pollock Center for Industrial Training, a workshop for people with disabilities. All donations are appreciated. Creating and sending birthday greetings is as much a part of her daily routine as going to work and doing her chores.

On September 22, Elizabeth’s birthday people get to give back to her for her kindness and gift card to them over the years. She receives more than 200 cards, many bearing gifts of stamps.

Please send Beth a card and some stamps as a surprise for her birthday and wonderful service at:

Clues to preventing cancers

For many years Integrated Medicine has known that many factors play into creating cancerous conditions in the body. Some of

Vitamin D3
Vitamin D3

these include, but are not limited to eating foods that create an acidic condition in the body like meats, milk products, processed foods and sugar. Anything that changes the pH to acidic from the normal alkaline can create a breeding grounds for cell/DNA changes including long lasting deep seated repressed emotions.

Now Cedric Garland, DrPH, professor of family and preventive medicine at the UC San Diego School of Medicine, and his research team explain that with enough vitamin D and calcium present, cells adhere to one another in tissue and act as normal, mature epithelial cells. If there is a deficiency of vitamin D, cells can lose their sticking ability as well as their identity as differentiated cells. When this happens, they may revert to a dangerous stem cell-like state and become cancerous.

In 2008, Dr. Garland and his colleagues found an association between a lack of sunlight exposure, low vitamin D and breast cancer. In earlier work, they showed linkages between increased levels of vitamin D3 or markers of vitamin D and a lower risk for breast, colon, ovarian and kidney cancers, too

FDA turtle of approval for tobacco industries

FDA protection
FDA protection

FDA guardians of the tobacco industy and not the US public

The FDA now has the role of approving the marketing and consumption of a product that directly promotes heart disease, strokes and cancer. By deciding to take the role of “censoring” the tobacco companies advertising instead of focusing on regulating the heath issues around smoking, the FDA, will now lend its stamp of approval to a product that openly destroys peoples’ health.

The newest group of regulations that has been touted as so good and as the first time the FDA has decided to “regulate” the tobacco industry contains the follow provisions:

1. It bans candy cigarettes and fruit-flavored cigarettes, but doesn’t even require cigarette companies to disclose a list of all ingredients they use until nearly a year-and-a-half after it is on the market.
2.  It bans the use of the word “light” from cigarette packages, which is meaningless, because smokers have grown accustomed to buying cigarettes with color codes that indicate a “light” designation.
3.   FDA in the position of approving the marketing and consumption of a product that directly promotes heart disease, strokes and cancer.

So the FDA, now approvals and gives its blessing to tobacco a product known and research has proved  to be harmful to peoples’ health, maybe that is not news.  The  FDA also encourages the use of big pharm. drugs and services,  while targeting the natural health food and product industry as  potentially harmful to health.

FDA are our guardians of our health and safety –something is wrong with this picture. It deserves the lame turtle award.

"Creating peace inside and in business dealings"

Don Miguel Ruiz

The Four Agreements

Don Miguel Ruiz’s Code for Life

1. Be impeccable with your word

Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love. agreement

2. Don’t take anything personally

Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering. agreement

3 . Don’t make assumptions

Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life. agreement

4. Always do your best

Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.

Yes ,we can change the world -one dedicated person at a time.

Don Miguel Ruiz’s philosophy come from the ancient Toltec wisdom of the native people of Southern Mexico. The Toltec were ‘people of knowledge’ – scientists and artists who created a society to explore and conserve the traditional spiritual knowledge and practices of their ancestors. The Toltec viewed science and spirit as part of the same entity, believing that all energy – material or ethereal – is derived from and governed by the universe.

Don Miguel Ruiz was a medical doctor and surgeon in Mexico After an automobile accident, he returned to his roots as Toltec and began healing, teaching, lecturing and writing during the 1980’s and 90’s.

Thank you for your inspired guidance, wisdom and peace you share.

Silver hair and health

Watch what you affirm.

Some say things like you are a pain in the neck when they are mad at some one. Then often times end up with a stiff neck or some discomfort in their neck .grey-hair585_204681a

Science now has found another link between the graying of one’s hair and stress. Now “genotoxic stress,” or stress from the toxic effects of chemicals or energy in our environment can damage DNA, like ultraviolet light. The researchers found that this cellular stress diminishes the supply of melanocyte stem cells (MSC) – cells in hair follicles that are responsible for making the pigment-producing cells that give hair its color.not necessarily age related and the stresses in one’s life.

melanin storage in melanocyte
melanin storage in melanocyte

Integrated medicine has known about this connection for year and routinely treat and help poeple destress. Applied kinesiology and homeopathy hves perfected the art of relieving the stress from physical, memory, emotional, and situational stres.
Melanocyte stem cells are so-called “adult stem cells.” They are not mature hair cells and they can continuously divide and supply our hair with the pigment producing cells it needs to have color. When a melanocyte stem cell matures into a pigment producing cell, or melanocyte, it is called differentiation.

For more information on ways to decreases stress in your life.
